In an exclusive interview, Jim Webb, CEO of Lower Valley Energy, discussed the ambitious new natural gas pipeline project that will stretch from Montpelier to Afton. Aiming to enhance reliability and access to natural gas, this endeavor represents a significant infrastructure investment for the region.

“We have two primary concerns in the utility business: reliability and rates,” explained Webb. “The main reason for the pipeline is reliability. Right now, we serve natural gas through liquefied natural gas (LNG), but as our community has expanded, our storage is no longer adequate.”

Historically, Lower Valley Energy has faced challenges during peak demand periods, particularly in the winter months. “We designed our system to handle three to four days of peak load coverage, but with the growth we’ve experienced, we realized we needed a more reliable source to ensure we meet our customers’ needs,” he said.

The project has been eight years in the making, facing delays primarily due to environmental studies and approvals. “We had to navigate various environmental concerns and work extensively with the Forest Service,” Webb noted. “The route we selected follows Crow Creek and is mainly along the road so it minimizes disruption, we have only had to cut down about 18 trees.”

The new pipeline promises to not only enhance reliability but also expand access to natural gas across the valley. “Our goal is to make natural gas available to more people. We envision extending the pipeline north down the valley in the future,” said Webb, hinting at potential growth plans.

With respect to costs, Webb remarked, “Initially, the pipeline gas will be at a similar price point to LNG, but over time, as we increase our customer base, the cost of pipeline gas will decrease.” He emphasized that natural gas is not only more cost-effective than propane but also a cleaner and safer option for consumers.

Reflecting on the community’s potential benefits, Webb stated, “Natural gas is cheaper, cleaner, and safer compared to propane. We’re encouraging people to make the switch.”

As construction nears completion, with gas expected to start flowing by mid-December, Webb expressed gratitude to his team and contractors. “Kudos to our team and contractors and everybody that worked on this, and the clean-up work they’ve done has been fantastic,” he noted.

In closing, Webb highlighted the project’s long-term promise for the community. “This pipeline will provide benefits to the valley for years to come. We’re committed to ensuring our residents have reliable access to energy,” he concluded.

As Lower Valley Energy wraps up this significant project, residents can look forward to enhanced energy security and cleaner energy options in the near future, just in time for the winter months.
