Inmates in the Lincoln County Detention Center in Kemmerer recently concluded a tamale sale, with a portion of proceeds going towards local senior centers in Lincoln County. The sale was a resounding success, with a total of 912 tamales sold, amounting to 76 dozen and generating $1,529 in sales. After deducting costs of $800.72, the event yielded a profit of $728.28.

In a move to give back to the community that generously supported the sale, it was decided that two-thirds of the profit would be donated to local charities, including the Kemmerer Senior Center, Cokeville Senior Center and Salt River Senior Center. A total of $498 was split evenly between the three organizations.

Additionally, $230.28 will be allocated to the Inmate Fund.

Sheriff Shane Johnson expressed his pride in the initiative, emphasizing the role of the inmates in the kitchen at the local correctional facility. “We have a big kitchen down there, and depending on our inmate population, we feed anywhere from 50 to 70 people, three meals a day,” he noted. “This was something that the inmates wanted to do, and they will help cook tamales, selling them after all costs are covered to donate a portion.”

This year marks the continuation of a project that has proven rewarding for inmates and the community alike. “They’ve done it in the past with other meals, and this opportunity allows them to give back and be productive instead of sitting in a cell, which isn’t good for anyone,” Johnson added. He highlighted the importance of inmate work programs, which include everything from cooking to laundry and even seamstress tasks.

The tamale sale exemplifies community spirit and teamwork, showcasing how even the smallest efforts can lead to significant impacts. The proceeds not only help local charities but also serve as a testament to the inmates’ desire to contribute positively to society.

As the holiday season approaches, the tamale sale stands out as an event that fosters connection, support, and community health, reminding us all of the power of coming together for a cause.
