Nearly 30 Western artists from across the United States participated in the Painting the West Workshop at the Cottonwood Ranch in Cokeville, July 24-26.
Attendees explored key elements of Western art including: horses, figures, and the Wyoming landscape—through direct observation and practice. The workshop featured demonstrations and instruction by Cowboy Artists of America members, Grant Redden and Chad Poppleton. Participants also had the opportunity to photograph models from the Fort Hall Reservation, mountain man reenactors, and regional cowboys. Local models, Kiana, Peyton and River Gilmore were also painted.
Representatives from Art of the West magazine engaged with the artists and provided insights into current trends within Western art.
Mark Teichert shared information about his grandmother, Minerva Teichert, as the group viewed her works at the high school. Artists also exhibited their painting studies at the ranch.
Utah artist Talia Whatcott remarked, “I had the best time attending the Painting the West Artist Workshop in Wyoming. I had the opportunity to learn from my western artist heroes Chad Poppleton, Grant Redden, and Charles Dayton… it was truly unforgettable.”
Preparations are underway for next summer’s workshop, supporting the ongoing promotion of arts and culture in Lincoln County.
Special thanks to Charles Dayton for bringing such a talented group to his area.
