SVI Radio Interview: Lxi Weber – Star Valley Arts Council

Lxi Weber, Executive Director of the Star Valley Arts Council, called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Tuesday, April 21 for her monthly report.

(0:00) Pleased to be joined over the phone today by Lexi Weber with Star Valley Arts Council. (0:06) Lexi, thanks so much for taking a few minutes of your time with me today. (0:09) Yeah, no problem.

(0:11) Well, Lexi, you are a busy, busy person, as is the Arts Council. (0:15) All sorts of cool stuff going on all the time. (0:19) And one of the things I want to talk about that’s coming up here pretty quickly (0:22) is this figure drawing on May 6th.

(0:25) Tell us more about that. (0:26) Yeah, this is something that we’ve been doing every month since January. (0:31) And our next one is Wednesday, May 6th from 7 to 9 at the Aetna Community Center.

(0:36) We’ve just had such a great response to this new program and we want it to continue to grow. (0:43) We accept walk-ins, but we do appreciate if anyone is able to register in advance (0:50) so that we can have an idea of how many tables and chairs and things to set up. (0:54) But we also are accepting any modeling applications.

(0:58) I mean, we take anyone who wants to do it, but just to register on our website, (1:02) we pay $60 for the night for anyone who’s willing to do that. (1:06) And we really do want all shapes and sizes. (1:09) We mean that very seriously.

(1:11) So this figure drawing, this is people are drawing someone like the thing that people (1:16) see that standing in the middle and they’re drawing the human form. (1:20) Yes. (1:21) Yep.

(1:21) We have a modeling stand. (1:22) We all set up around it and we give this model lots of breaks, (1:26) but there’s just such a benefit to drawing from a live model. (1:31) Okay.

(1:32) And that’s coming up on May 6th. (1:34) And you said that you’ll take walk-ins, but they can register, (1:38) I assume, at starvalleyarts.org. (1:40) Is that correct? (1:41) Yes. (1:42) All right.

(1:43) Speaking with Lexi Weber here of Star Valley Arts Council. (1:45) Lexi, you’ve also got the Children’s Theater coming up in June. (1:50) And that’s not a lot of time between now and Children’s Theater in June.

(1:54) Tell us about that project. (1:56) Yeah. (1:58) The play that we chose for this year is The Rockin’ Tale of Snow White.

(2:02) And the format will be the same as we did last year, (2:05) where we do auditions during the school year in May. (2:09) We have those dates on our website. (2:11) The rehearsals will start the first week of June.

(2:13) And this is kind of a time-intensive thing for anyone who’s done this before. (2:16) It’s about every day for three weeks where they rehearse. (2:22) And then the performances will be June 17th, 18th, and 19th.

(2:26) That’s a Wednesday through Friday. (2:28) And we do have our registration open now on our website. (2:32) Lexi, about how many kids do you typically have do the Children’s Theater? (2:38) It grows every year.

(2:39) But last year we had 81. (2:41) Oh, wow. (2:42) It is a lot.

(2:43) Yeah. (2:44) It’s just a really popular program. (2:45) And so you’re anticipating similar numbers today.

(2:48) And there’s roles for everybody, right? (2:52) Yes, there is. (2:53) All right. (2:53) That Children’s Theater coming up in June.

(2:56) Also coming up, something new this week. (2:58) You have an Art Lane Exhibition. (3:00) Tell me what this is.

(3:02) Yeah. (3:03) So in the Cheyenne Community Center, (3:05) they just had this big empty wall between the DMV and the library. (3:09) And they asked if there was a way that we could use this.

(3:11) And so, of course, we wanted to. (3:14) We were able to hang these gallery wires (3:20) so that we can just change out the art every three months. (3:24) So our plan is to have a different theme that artists can submit work for.

(3:30) So our last one was Feathers and Fur. (3:32) We had all these animals. (3:33) It was a really great show.

(3:34) We got a lot of feedback. (3:36) And then we just barely changed it out yesterday for our new exhibit, (3:40) which is Dominant Hue. (3:42) And we’ve collected some really cool pieces.

(3:45) We just want people to realize that it is constantly changing. (3:48) So even though you’ve seen it once, you need to go back and see it, right? (3:53) All these pieces are for sale. (3:55) That’s not necessarily the purpose.

(3:58) I mean, if something’s old, that’s great. (4:00) But really, the purpose is to give these artists a venue to show things (4:05) that maybe they wouldn’t be able to show otherwise. (4:07) And also make the wall look nice.

(4:09) It really does look nice. (4:12) And so again, you’re looking for local artists. (4:15) And what’s kind of neat about this is where the theme continues to change.

(4:19) Obviously, artists can continue to put different works in as well. (4:24) It doesn’t have to be, oh, I only do one thing. (4:28) They can do multiple things.

(4:30) Yeah. (4:30) And my hope really is that people will create art specifically for these shows (4:34) because it pushes you as an artist and just gives you something to work for. (4:40) We have our next few themes on our website (4:45) so that people can really think about this in advance.

(4:48) Again, we really encourage people to go check out starvalleyarts.org. (4:52) A lot of information on there, including this new Art Lane Exhibition, which is new this week. (4:58) You got the Children’s Theater coming up in June. (5:00) And then this figure drawing coming up really soon on May 6th.

(5:04) Lexi, anything that we haven’t touched on that you might want to mention? (5:08) That’s it. (5:09) All right. (5:10) Lexi Weber with the Star Valley Arts Council.

(5:11) Appreciate your time, Lexi. (5:12) And again, starvalleyarts.org.
