The Afton Town Council met on August 11 for its regular meeting, hearing updates on the town golf course, police activity, tourism, development and infrastructure matters.

Bryce Burton reported that the Afton Golf Course has remained in good condition despite summer heat. Crews are following a watering schedule of four days on and two days off to maintain the grass, he said.

Upcoming activity at the course includes night golf, high school golf events and the Afton Volunteer Fire Department’s annual golf tournament on August 23. The Wyoming Golf Association will also visit to rate the course, a process completed every few years.

“Men’s league has been extremely successful this year,” Burton said.

Police Chief Jason Romberg reported a substantial increase in activity for the Afton Police Department. From January 1 through 3 p.m. August 10, officers handled 3,476 calls for service, compared with 2,904 during the same period last year.

Romberg attributed part of the increase to officers’ self-initiated traffic stops and field contacts, saying the department has more “boots on the job.” He reported that Officer Booth completed training last month and is nearing independent duty. The department has received three applications for the open sergeant position.

The council also discussed a letter criticizing the higher volume of traffic stops. Romberg said enforcement has increased in response to serious speeding concerns.

“Fourteen over the speed limit is too fast,” Romberg said. “We have people going 70 in a 30.”

Major Jensen said E-Force data showed the average speeding ticket issued in Afton involves a driver traveling 15 mph over the posted limit. The highest speed he had seen reported was 46 mph over the limit.

“I will back my officers 100 percent,” Robert said. “I review videos and everything else. There has not been one illegal traffic stop made. We are stepping it up, and I have a crew willing to do that.”

Elsewhere, the Tourism Board recapped several successful recent events, including the annual fish scramble, which was initially not expected to take place but moved forward with support from the Town Council, along with other community activities.

The council approved development requests involving Simple Housing Concepts LLC, the Danzi property and Rocky Road Industrial Park. Members also approved event permits, a Child Development Center lease agreement and a resolution accepting water infrastructure for Afton Sky Ranch.

The next town council meeting will be held on September 8, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
