Wyoming Game and Fish Department investigating fish mortality event on Salt River

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is currently investigating a widespread fish mortality along the Salt River in Star Valley. Based on observations from biologists and reports from anglers, mortalities are occurring throughout the length of the river between the Salt River Range and Palisades Reservoir.

Following reports from local anglers, Game and Fish biologists conducted field observations and collected several fish for analysis at the Department’s Fish Health Laboratory in Laramie to determine the cause of mortality. At this time, no specific cause has been identified. Observations indicate that the situation is primarily affecting Mountain Whitefish, which have not shown any visible external symptoms. Water temperatures in the river currently remain cool, peaking around 62°F in the afternoon.

“We appreciate the anglers who quickly brought this to our attention,” said Darren Rhea, Jackson Region Fisheries Biologist. “Prompt reporting is critical for our effective response. We are gathering necessary samples to better understand the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

While fisheries managers closely monitor the area, the Salt River will remain open for all recreational activities, including fishing. Anglers will likely continue to encounter significant numbers of dead or dying fish.  Anglers practicing catch and release should continue to use best practices to minimize stress, such as landing fish quickly and keeping them in the water during release.

Game and Fish asks the public to report any additional fish mortalities observed in waterways across the region by contacting the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Jackson Regional Office at (307) 733-2321.
