A single-vehicle accident that included a fatality took place on Friday morning at mile marker 131 on US 89 in the Snake River Canyon.

According to information from the Alpine Fire District and the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the initial call went out at 6:20 a.m. September 18,  with a vehicle colliding with the guardrail and riding the rail for a significant distance before leaving the roadway and rolling down the embankment into the river.

Members of the Alpine Fire Department were “able to get an immediate size up of the incident as one of our volunteers was traveling up the canyon at the time of the call,” according to the Alpine Wyoming Fire District Facebook page.

The driver of the vehicle was deceased upon arrival. According to the WHP, there were no skid marks on the roadway and the cause of the accident is unclear at this time and is currently under investigation.  The name of the victim has not been released at this time.

The post from Alpine Fire noted they were able to transport the victim with their rescue raft to the boat ramp and assist in the clean-up of the scene and the removal of the vehicle.

In addition to Alpine Fire, Star Valley EMS, the Star Valley Search and Rescue, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
