SVI Radio Interview: Together We Bowl – Bowling for Individuals with Disabilities

Amy Hansen, Tyralee Larson and Kelly Meyer all called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Thursday, October 29 to introduce Together We Bowl, a bowling league for individuals with disabilities, that we begin November 5 at Skyview Lanes in Afton.

(0:00) And joining me live this morning, Amy Hansen at Star Valley Station and also Tyra Lee Larson (0:06) and Kelly Meyer joining us on the call as well. Today, we’re going to talk about the (0:11) Disabilities Bowling League. That’s going to start very, very soon at Skyview Lanes inside (0:17) Star Valley Station.

Amy, Tyra Lee, Kelly, good morning. How are you guys all doing today? (0:23) We’re doing really good. Thank you for having us on this morning.

(0:27) Absolutely. Appreciate your time. And I’m kind of excited to learn more about this.

Amy, (0:31) let’s start with you as you manage Star Valley Station, of course, Skyview Lanes. (0:36) Tell us about this event that’s going to be beginning soon for specifically the (0:41) Disabilities Bowling League. What is this? So it’s called Together We Bowl.

It’s for (0:47) individuals that have disabilities. We already host LSR that comes in and Aaron’s group that (0:54) comes in on Wednesdays. And it’s just exciting for me to see how happy these individuals are (0:59) when they come in.

And so I’ve been kind of playing with it a little bit. And I was like, (1:04) hey, why not get them a bag and a ball and let’s put it all together and give them a special (1:08) opportunity to come in and have fun and enjoy themselves. Fantastic.

Love it. And so give us (1:14) some of the maybe logistics of this and how does it start and when does it start and everything like (1:19) that? So we are starting November 5th. We will start bowling around noon after we get everybody (1:26) checked in.

They’ll get a choice of a ball and a bag. We have a few different choices for them. (1:32) If they have a ball in a bag already, then we’ve discounted it down to where they’re just going to (1:36) pay for their bowling.

We also will be serving them food if they would like to purchase food. (1:41) We’ll have the kitchen open for them. So it’s just a fun day for them to come in and (1:45) just enjoy themselves.

Fantastic. Love it. Also joining us live this morning is Tyra Lee Larson (1:50) and Kelly Meyer.

Tyra Leland, maybe let’s start with you. You guys assist some individuals with (1:55) disabilities and maybe let’s get your insight on this and how you think it might benefit those (2:00) that you guys associate with on a regular basis. Tyra Lee? Well, I bring a young man on Thursdays (2:05) and bowling.

Kelly brings her. She always has a couple extras with her and we’ve been kind of (2:09) doing that for a while. And I bowl on a couple of leagues and the young man that I help with is (2:14) always like, well, why can’t I bowl on the league? Why can’t I bowl on the league? And so then we (2:17) started talking and we’re like, well, why can’t we put a league together for them? How much fun (2:21) would that be? And then there’s also the special Olympics that we could be doing that with also, (2:26) but we have to have a league and we have to have all of that to do it.

So Amy’s like, well, (2:30) let’s do that. And so here we are. That’s what we’re starting.

Love it. Absolutely. And Kelly, (2:35) how about your thoughts? I’m sure you’ve seen that this could be a great benefit to those that (2:39) work with, right? Oh, absolutely.

Those I work with and as a parent, you know, (2:47) individuals who age out of the school system, they lose quite a lot. They lose their peers, (2:52) they lose that support system, but they also lose the fun things that they all did together. (2:58) And I think this is just a great opportunity to make sure that everyone has an opportunity (3:03) to feel included or a chance to belong to something, be a part of a team, (3:08) celebrate their wins and celebrate them with others who are just as excited to be there with (3:13) them.

Yeah, love it. Absolutely. So Amy, remind us again, if someone knows someone that would (3:19) probably like to participate in this or how do they get involved? How do they contact you and (3:23) get signed up and make sure that they’re there? They can follow or text me on my cell phone, (3:28) which is, you know, the 307-413-8177, or just show up on that Thursday and we’ll get them going and (3:36) it’s going to be fun.

Excellent. We do have a flyer, by the way, posted on the events page (3:40) of SBINews.com, so people can go there and see the flyer, get some of the details as well. (3:44) Tyra Lee, Kelly, anything else about this that you guys would like to mention from your perspective? (3:51) Yeah, I just wanted to say, you know, if there’s people out there that are looking to help or want (3:56) to sponsor an athlete that maybe otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate, that, you know, (4:01) reach out to Amy.

Again, she’s got her number available for text or call, but yeah, if the (4:06) community would like to support someone who wants to bowl or be a part of this program, then we would (4:11) love to have you help. Fantastic. Amy, Tyra Lee, anything we missed that you guys would like to (4:17) mention today? Sounds like we got it all.

I think we’re great. I think it’ll be a great time. Come (4:23) out and have some fun.

Excellent. I think it’s a fantastic idea. Love it.

And again, it all begins (4:27) very, very soon, so go find the flyer on the events page at svinews.com. Contact Amy (4:32) at Star Valley Station for details. Thank you all so very much. Look forward to seeing how this (4:35) progresses and grows.

Thank you. Thank you. It’s all part of the weekday wake-up this morning on (4:40) the SVI Radio Network.
