SVI Radio Interview: Brian Muir, City of Kemmerer Administrator

Brian Muir, Administrator for the City of Kemmerer, called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Thursday, January 8 for his monthly report. Muir reported on winter recreation options, upcoming housing projects and more.

(0:00) In the month the report from the city of Kemmer administrator Brian Muir joining me live over the phone this morning Brian. Good morning (0:07) How are you today? (0:10) Fantastic the wonderful beautiful clear (0:13) Crisp is right. Well, we appreciate your time as always and what’s been going on in camera (0:21) What are some things being discussed and talked about right now? (0:24) Well, what’s actually kind of exciting for our youth in the community is our hockey program (0:29) is in our we have a (0:31) new hockey program that (0:33) we’re (0:35) Working on and actually it’s already started.

We’ve gotten the equipment (0:39) for these young folks and and also an ice-skating rink and a hockey rink and (0:46) It’s all they started practicing indoors with you know (0:50) Just with without having to go on to the ice, but tonight they’re hoping to try out the ice (0:56) I think and and it’s over by the golf course, and I think we’ve got 30 you signed up. It’s a good way to to get (1:03) families involved with the being proactive about their winter instead of just sitting home and (1:10) Watching things on TV sitting home sitting home and wishing it wasn’t winter, right? Yeah (1:16) No, it is. It is a fantastic program and I’m happy to hear that.

There’s been some good participation this year and (1:22) At least right out of the gate. We’ll see where this goes (1:25) I mean it could turn into to quite the thing for Southern Lincoln County (1:29) Yeah, that’s that’s what we’re hoping it (1:30) I mean it it you know getting exercise in the winter is a good way to overcome the winter blues to for (1:36) For folks and we actually our rec center is alive (1:39) This is when it’s being used probably the most and that we actually have 57 (1:44) people signed up for our indoor walking club around our track to and (1:48) We just got done with junior jazz one one round one (1:54) Group of them and then for the younger folks and then the next (1:58) Next folks are getting ready after the hockey is ready (2:01) so we try to keep things moving here and there’s even an indoor archery club if you want to join it and and (2:07) We’re working with the ski resort with Pine Creek ski resort on on getting some ski passes (2:13) discounts so (2:14) You can get a hold of our rec center, and they can tell you more about that so (2:19) Fantastic yeah, they’re doing a great job (2:20) And and you mentioned that the hockey teams trying to maybe get on the ice today if someone isn’t playing hockey to the does the (2:27) Town have skates available for rent. Yeah, if someone wanted to do that (2:30) Yes, we do we have skates are available for all sizes and in fact John Tibbetts (2:36) And I were just talking about maybe we go out and play some hockey against each other.

He’s our new. He’s our new parks and (2:44) Golf director so (2:46) He’s been really instrumental in getting this thing off the ground and so as well as six our rec manager (2:51) So well if that if that match happens you let us know an SP. I might need to broadcast a live feed (2:58) the slow motion (3:00) I would lose, but it would be fun to watch (3:03) Kemmer City administrator Brian Muir on the weekday wake up this morning.

What else is happening in Kemmer right now? (3:10) Well, we got a lot of snow (3:11) What is interesting I was driving through Evanston the other day (3:15) And they hardly had any but we had six inches and so our our street crews are out there working hard (3:20) They get up early early in the morning (3:22) You know five o’clock and start plowing and and doing things and we actually got another inch last night (3:29) They’re trying to clean things up and keep everything safe and for the drivers in the community (3:34) And and I think they’re doing a good job, so (3:38) If you want to know some other things going on our zoning board just approved the gateway (3:45) PUD phase 1a (3:48) For 78 and they did their findings and facts and conclusions this week at a special meeting (3:53) We’re trying to do everything we can to (3:55) Help them get ready to to build in the spring the 78 homes (4:01) Have been approved by the zoning board (4:04) There’s still some more details to follow (4:06) but they’re trying to put in 25 homes this summer and the remaining 53 the following in 2027 and (4:14) So that’s what’s going on in the housing side of things. We’re still up a few (4:19) Eyes to dot and T’s to cross and and get the development agreement with them, but things are moving along (4:26) One other thing on this coming Monday. We’re having a public hearing (4:32) To look at selling six and a half acres of city property (4:38) There is one interested party and in order to do that (4:41) We need to show that it has economic benefit to the community and and this interested party (4:47) wants to bring in (4:48) Hundreds of jobs to the to the communities is so it’s an opportunity that we’re hoping will come to fruition so (4:56) That’s the public hearing on Monday at City Council.

Okay, what and and what would the land be used for? (5:02) um (5:03) this party if (5:05) What what happens next is? (5:08) If the City Council makes an economic development finding then we can go into negotiations with interested parties (5:14) And this this this one interested party wants to put in a home manufacturing (5:19) Facility so they can build homes quicker and more affordably for our very remote (5:26) you know (5:28) Economy that we have here, okay, okay, so this is the company we we I think we discussed last time (5:34) We were on the air that would like to yeah, like yeah, QB is the name of the company. That’s interested (5:40) They’re they’re the party that has the interest at this point (5:43) But there’s a first step to getting to be able to negotiate with any party so (5:48) Absolutely timber City administrator Brian you’re on the weekday wake up Brian as we hit the year (5:53) 2026 this was the year that (5:55) Tara power is really starting or at least in the plans to really start ramping up (6:00) Construction is starting to see a lot of those temporary workers coming to southern Lincoln County (6:07) Does this Kemmerer and the surrounding communities that feel ready at this point for everything to start ramping up I? (6:14) Let me just tell you I feel ready for 2026. I’m not feeling as ready for 2027 (6:20) so I’m just going to take one day at a time and (6:22) If everything comes to fruition on the housing projects that we’re going we should be ready for 2027 as well (6:29) But that’s what we’re working hard to do so (6:31) Certainly all right Brian anything.

We missed you’d like to mention today (6:35) Yeah, there is a couple other things. I thought pretty exciting. I always like to talk about (6:40) kind of a symbol of our our increasing (6:45) Prosperity I guess you would say it in camera and (6:47) What’s going on here is? (6:50) our (6:50) People who are investing in our downtown Bob and Joy Fox (6:54) They’re building there the second Golden Rule store that that was when I came here almost seven years ago (7:00) That was one of the things I was hoping we could save is that historic? (7:04) 1902 JCPenney second Golden Rule store building and (7:08) They’ve already put in some structural (7:12) Support to that building as well as some (7:15) Rafters and it’s a new roofing and they’re making progress (7:18) There’s a lot of steps to go to but that we’re just really excited and appreciate their investment in community and also we’re looking at (7:25) You know we have a lot of we’re trying to get ready for this this summer.

We just found out that (7:32) We’re going to have fossil fest (7:34) This coming summer wasn’t sure about that (7:38) But there’s the fossil effects folks are working together and trying to get that prepared for June (7:44) and then in July of course our oyster rich and one of the things that we need in order to (7:49) Have a better long term and better a good experience in the downtown is a permanent stage, so we’re getting some (7:56) Doing some research on doing a permanent stage. We’ve looked at in the triangle there (8:02) for these events and and we’ve looked at (8:05) Some other places like in Evanston what they’ve done (8:08) And we we think we might be able to do something pretty neat there (8:12) And and also have removable walls on that permanent stage so that the business can still be (8:17) Viewed when there’s not a concert or something so those are some things we’re working on (8:23) Never a dull moment in camera. I was gonna say that’s that’s a pretty good list as always so (8:28) Camera City administrator Brian Muir this morning on the weekday wake up Brian (8:31) Wish you the best thank you for your time, and hope you get your stretches in for that hockey game (8:39) So part of the weekday wake up this morning on SVI radio
