
Powered by a dominant performance from Addison Barnes and a balanced effort across nearly every event category, the Cokeville girls captured the 1A West Regional track and field championship Saturday in Shoshoni.
Cokeville scored 158 points to edge Saratoga with 136 and Burlington with 135 in one of the closest regional team races in the state. The Panther boys also turned in a solid showing, finishing fourth with 61 points behind Saratoga, Burlington and Little Snake River.
Barnes led the way for the Cokeville girls with an outstanding regional performance, winning four individual events and contributing points throughout the meet. She claimed titles in the 200 meters in 26.09 seconds, the 400 in 59.11 and the 100 hurdles in 16.16 before adding another championship in the 300 hurdles with a winning time of 48.06.
Mia Dayton added another strong all-around effort for the Panthers, finishing second in the 100 meters in 12.98, third in the 200 in 27.08 and second in the 400 in 1:00.68. Dayton also placed third in the 800 at 2:27.36.
Cokeville’s distance runners added crucial points in the team race. Geneva Murdock placed second in both the 800 and 1,600 meters with times of 2:26.49 and 5:36.44, respectively, while Bailey Bird earned an eighth-place finish in the 1,600. Sarah Dietz added points in the 3,200 with an eighth-place finish.
The Panthers also excelled in hurdle events behind Barnes and Whitli Groll. Groll finished second in the 100 hurdles in 17.19 and added a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles in 51.31. Presli Pope placed seventh in the 100 hurdles.
Cokeville’s relay teams consistently scored throughout the meet. The Panthers finished runner-up in the 4×100, 4×400 and 4×800 relays. The 4×100 relay team of Pope, Bird, Rachel Thomas and Kynleigh Davis clocked 54.18, while the 4×400 squad of Bird, Bentley McKinnon, Pope and Paislee Tims finished in 4:47.14. The 4×800 relay team of Bird, Dietz, Murdock and Tims posted an 11:03.62.
Rachel Thomas highlighted the Panthers’ field event success by winning the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 7 inches and placing second in the triple jump at 32-4. McKinnon added a third-place finish in pole vault, and Davis scored in discus with an eighth-place throw.
On the boys side, Joey Thomas delivered the top performance for Cokeville. Thomas captured the regional championship in the 800 meters in 2:00.83 and finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:40.50.
Thomas also anchored the Panthers’ winning medley relay team. Nephi Cook, Ammon Hatch, Flint Linford and Thomas combined to win the event in 3:57.30.
Cokeville nearly added another relay title in the 4×400, where Thomas, Linford, Cook and Hatch placed second in 3:43.27. The Panthers also took fourth in the 4×100 relay behind Cooper Bird, Nathan Awtrey, Bodee Vierig and Killian Teichert.
Linford contributed additional points with a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters, while Hatch and Cook both scored in the hurdles. Hatch placed fifth in the 110 hurdles, and Cook finished seventh in the same event while adding sixth in the 300 hurdles.
In field events, Heber Dayton and Cooper Bird both placed in pole vault, while Hatch earned an eighth-place finish in triple jump.
With the regional meet complete, Cokeville now turns its attention to the 1A State Track and Field Championships, where the Panthers will look to build on their regional momentum.
