• SVHS Invite is this Saturday
The Star Valley Lady Braves no doubt had some tired legs at the end of the Evanston Border Wars over this past weekend as they played eight matches over a two-day span in an event that included some outdoor volleyball matches for the first time in Wyoming’s high school history.
“I thought we defended the border well at the border war,” joked coach Kalin Schwab. “We repelled the Utah and Idaho teams pretty well. Overall we learned a lot and we played a lot of volleyball. But it was a lot of fun.”
The Lady Braves opened up their Friday efforts with a tight win over the Lander Tigers and then picked up another over Idaho powerhouse Hillcrest. Things went a little south against cross-state rival Cheyenne East with the Thunderbirds easily dispatching Star Valley in two sets. The girls bounced back by winning handily over Layton Christian.
Saturday started with a match against top-ranked Kelly Walsh and the Trojans looked every bit the part as they sliced through Star Valley in two straight sets. Showing their resilience, the Lady Braves won their last three matches with sweeps over Bonneville, Pinedale and South Summit.
“We have a younger team and I think some of the youth we shook it off against some big schools in some tight games,” Schwab added. “They are coming together. Every game they get a little bit better at that.”
This week the Lady Braves will get to play their first home matches as they host the SVHS Invite with games slated to begin Saturday morning. The teams coming to the tournament include the Cody Fillies and the Laramie Plainsmen.
“Cody, bless their heart, will be coming two weekends in a row so we get to see them early before a cross-quad match,” Schwab added. “Laramie is not always a team we get to see and then Jackson and Malad will be here. “They are kind of two different spectrums of the state and we want to play them. It gives everyone a chance to see teams they don’t normally see.”
