• Cody and Riverton in town this weekend for cross-quad matches
The Lady Braves Volleyball team hosted their annual invitational with four teams in attendance on Saturday including perennial powers Laramie and Cody. Star Valley went 3-1 on the day including a victory over the Plainsmen to open the day.
The team then picked up another victory over the Malad Dragons in three sets before falling to the Fillies in a tough three set outing. They wrapped the day with a 2-0 sweep over the Jackson Lady Broncs.
“I was thrilled with how we did,” replied head coach Kalin Schwab. “It was a good tournament. It was quick, but it was a high level of competition. I don’t know if we’ve been able to knock off Laramie so that was a cool milestone for the program. Especially after we showed some grit and dug in and get them in the third set.
The match against the Fillies was a match-up that will set up a cross-quad meeting in the regular season in Afton on Friday with a 3 p.m. start time. The Lady Braves will then host Riverton on Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m varsity start.
Coach Schwab hopes fans and students will turn out for the matches with the Fillies coming back for the second time in seven days in one of two cross-quad matches that can determine post-season seeding.
“They can be tiebreaker games,” he explained. “It’s come up in the last two years. You can be tied with someone and end up getting a different seed based on these cross-quad games sometimes. You could also be playing against one of them in the first round of regionals too depending how things go.”
Plus, there is a natural rivalry with Cody from the past decade plus on the football field.
“I think we match up pretty well against Cody,” Schwab explained. “We came out a little nervous and there’s a rivalry and we got ourselves in a pretty good hole in the first set but we were able to shrink it down. Then we won the second set and it was close in the third. I think we have some confidence that we can compete against them. That’s the lesson I think we learned in that one. The girls were already saying they wished it was a best of five. These girls are ready to start playing five sets. We enjoyed the tournament but truthfully this is our home opener. I hope people want to come see and welcome Cody back to 4A.”
