The Wyoming high school golf season came to an end over the weekend. For the 4A classification that was a pair of rounds at the Purple Sage course in Evanston where weather challenged the players and shortened the number of holes on the first day. Athletes were only able to log in nine holes which put even more of an emphasis on the second day where teams were able to play all 18.
“The weather on Day 1 was horrific,” replied head coach Kelly Fullmer. “The kids showed patience and resolve in representing our community well.
For Star Valley, the Braves finished fifth in a very tight team race where they were only 12 strokes out of first place which was claimed by Thunder Basin. The Bolts shot a 457 while Star Valley finished with a 469. The Riverton Wolverines finished as runner-up, just two strokes back while Laramie was third with a 465.
“We played good at state, the winners just played great,” Fullmer noted. “On the boys side, we knew going in that five teams could win, and we were one of them. “We ended up 12 strokes out of first place, ten strokes out of second place, four strokes out of third place, and two strokes out of 4th place. So fifth place is not where we wanted to finish, but we were thrilled to be in the hunt with a possibility of winning, something we just don’t have some years in 4A.”
Deegan Hill had Star Valley’s top score with a 112 overall, shooting a 37 on the nine holes and then shooting a 75 on Day 2. His total was good enough for eighth overall. Jaxon Burr of Campbell County shot a second round of 69 to win by four strokes over Thunder Basin’s Brooks Watts. Braxton Johnson finished with a 118, Wyatt Pack finished with a 119 and Daltyn DeCora carded a 120.
The Lady Braves finished seventh overall with a team total of 446. Kelly Walsh won the team title with a 390. Thunder Basin finished second with a 393.
“The girls side was also close,” Fullmer said. “Less than 20 strokes separated the five teams outside the top three.”
The Lady Braves were led by Kate Ricks who scored a 147. Averie Rivard had a 149 and Presley Frome scored a 155. Laramie’s Addie Plassmeyer shot a 122, edging Central’s Bella Beach by one stroke. Khloe Romo of Kelly Walsh was just one stroke behind her for third.
Junior Deegan Hill earned All-State for his weekend play.
“He went two under par on the last three holes and showed the skill and mental strength that have made him one of the best high school golfers in the state,” Fullmer added. “Our seniors Daltyn DeCora, Kate Ricks, Presley Frome, and Paylan Merritt gave leadership all season and each played a part in making this season so successful and fun. We would also like to thank Simplot and Bryan Pack Construction for their generous donations to our program this year.”
