CODY (WNE) — The State Treasurer’s Office paid $23.76 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

Payments from the Unclaimed Property Division of the Wyoming State Treasurer’s Office continue to climb as 40.6 % of all money paid during the program’s history has occurred over  the past two years alone. 

A combination of 7,621 checks and wire transfers reunited $23.76 million to its rightful owners in the  fiscal year that ended June 30 (FY26), while another $41.32 million was paid in FY25. The surge  corresponds with a large amount of funds tied to virtual currency that was reported to the state in 2024.

“We continue to work hard to reunite money and other unclaimed property to their rightful owners,”  Wyoming State Treasurer Curt Meier said. 

The largest payment during the past fiscal year was for $976,842.13. A total of 43 payments during  FY26 exceeded $100,000, with 17 of those payments being made via foreign wire transfer and 26 checks being mailed to locations throughout Wyoming and other areas of the country. 

Despite these efforts, the state continues to hold more than $349 million along with numerous shares of securities as well as safe deposit box contents that have been abandoned. Earnings from this money completely fund the Unclaimed Property Division without using any tax dollars. Earnings in excess of  that amount – $12.69 million in FY26 – are deposited into the state’s general fund.
