Bruce discussed the novel idea that has been proposed: subcontracting local ranchers to feed the elk instead of relying solely on the Game & Fish Department. “Lots of ideas have been floated out there,” she noted, emphasizing the need for creative solutions as the department assesses its elk management strategies.
Currently, the department is focused on three action plans tailored to the unique needs of each of the 22 different feedgrounds across the state. “It’s hard to get down into the details with so many feedgrounds,” Bruce explained. The action plans aim to address specific local conditions while incorporating community input.
“A lot of this is wrapped around elk objectives,” Bruce continued. “How many elk do people want to see in that area? What does feeding look like with that goal in mind?” This approach aims to align wildlife management with public expectations and environmental sustainability.
Bruce assured listeners that public engagement will play a crucial role in the development of these action plans. “As we get further down these action plans, they will have a very high public engagement process,” she stated. The department is eager to gather feedback on various creative ideas, ensuring that community voices are considered as they move forward.
The discussion reflects a broader shift in wildlife management, with an emphasis on collaboration between state agencies, ranchers, and the public. As Wyoming navigates the complexities of elk management, Bruce’s leadership and commitment to innovative solutions signal a proactive approach to preserving the state’s natural resources.
