Children have a great opportunity on August 13 to learn about the “foods that fuel us” and how to choose food that is best for our bodies to grow and function to their best.

Berean Bible Fellowship has created two camps, both of which go hand-in-hand, to teach valuable life skills to kids as they learn what to look for on food labels and how to get the most for their bodies and minds from their diets.

Organizer Vicky Little shared the how kids will learn to find foods that are simple and healthy for them.  They will learn what to look for as well as how to make their own healthy snacks in fun, hands-on ways.

Cookie-cutter shapes will be included to make the process more engaging as campers create snacks, wraps, and try a variety of foods—many of which may be new to them.

Limited to 15 students each, the camps will be held at Berean  Bible Fellowship on Main Street in Afton.

The first camp, Nutrition Detectives, will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will focus on “getting out a magnifying glass and looking at the label,” Little said. Participants will learn about serving sizes and how to identify both positive and negative ingredients.

The second camp, Eat the Rainbow, will run from 4 to 6 p.m. and teach kids about the wide variety of foods available and the importance of a balanced, colorful diet. Little said this session is especially helpful for picky eaters, as children will help prepare their own food and get excited about the benefits of the foods they try.

After all the hands on learning and eating, there will also be some prizes and helpful information to take home.

“You’ve got good food, you’ve got good memories,” Little said in closing.
