Two Star Valley High School welding students have launched a metal fabrication business in which they create customized items such as fire pits and planters for the public. Their passion for welding is taking them to the next level of success in business and creativity.
Jack and Payzli Nield, who are distant cousins, have teamed up to establish Nield Welding. Jack, the son of Blake and Judi Nield, is a Senior at Star Valley High School. Payzli, the daughter of JR and Lyndi Nield, is a 2025 graduate of SVHS. She has started her post high school studies in Business Management at Bridgerland Technical College in Logan, and plans to specialize in accounting.
While Jack does the bulk of the welding, Payzli designs their items and programs the plasma table to cut the metal pieces for assembly. The duo has successfully created and sold several pieces over the last few months.
“I get on the program and create all the different pieces to make it become 3-D and functional,” says Payzli. “We both really enjoyed welding throughout high school and last year we ended up in one of the classes together. Mr. [Shawn] Merrit had us building a fire pit for a lady at the school. It was going to be a gift for her. Everybody wanted more, so we just kept making more. We decided to turn it into a business and make some profit off of it.”
Jack began welding several years ago with Alan Taylor, who is a family friend. He has continued to hone his skills while advancing through the high school program. Payzli started welding her freshman year at SVHS and has learned a great deal through her experience.
“We like to weld, and we have fun doing it,” says Jack. “We just like to work with metal and with our hands. I want to weld as much as I can and continue to grow the business welding commission projects after high school.”

Nield Welding can be found on Facebook where the business explains their work and purpose. “What started as a shared passion for welding and fabrication has become a creative outlet where we build custom fire pits, planters, and more. From striking backyard centerpieces to durable, handcrafted designs, we bring skill, creativity, and attention to detail in every project.”
Jack is confident that they can create just about anything the public would like. “We can cut out anything people want – names, or whatever they are into, from a sheet of metal.”
Their fire pits and planters are “heavy duty” and completely customizable.” Their work “will last” and Payzli is confident that Nield Welding is the place to get anything metal you want or need. “You should come to us because we are making some pretty good fire pits.”
“At the heart of our business is a love for working with metal and for turning simple materials into something unique and long-lasting,” says the Nield Welding Facebook Page. “Whether you’re looking to enhance your outdoor space or create a one-of-a-kind gift, we’re here to help bring your ideas to life.”
