Since the opening of the current Etna Elementary School, which replaced Metcalf Elementary, there have been concerns about the crosswalk usage for students making their way across an increasingly busier U.S. 89.
After several years of working with entities such as the Wyoming Department of Transportation, the moving of that crosswalk to be directly in front of the school is now a reality.
“Lincoln County School District #2 is pleased to announce a significant step forward in student safety near Etna Elementary School,” the district stated in a message sent out to parents. “After a recent meeting with officials from the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, School Board members, and other district leaders, WYDOT has agreed to add a new crosswalk across US Highway 89, directly in front of Etna Elementary.”
“It’s been a concern of the school district and the parents and community in Etna,” noted LCSD #2 Transportation Director Ryan Lyman. “They’ve been working together really well to get all the key players like WYDOT and the sheriff’s office on the same page as they will be enforcing that. That 20 mph speed is going to be a little quicker for people; as they come in from the south anyway. They are working to make that a safe space for the kids to cross.”
According to the statement from the district, WYDOT will be moving the flashing school zone lights to “better protect this new crossing, making it easier for drivers to slow down and stay alert during student arrival and dismissal times.”
The statement went on to say: “We want to extend our sincere appreciation to WYDOT for their responsiveness, collaboration, and commitment to student safety. We believe it takes genuine partnership and flexibility to make adjustments like this, and we are incredibly grateful for their willingness to listen to the community and take action.
“We also want to thank Sheriff Shane Johnson, Chairman Darnell Simpson, Trustee Jake Long, and the many parents and community members who have been involved and helped bring attention to the issue. Your voices and support matter, and this outcome reflects what we can accomplish when we work together.”
The goal for completion of the move is for this fall, weather and resources permitting.
“As part of our comprehensive student safety program, we want to make it clear that school bus stops along the west side of the highway will remain in place, both before and after school. Riding the bus remains the safest way for students to get to and from school, and we encourage all families to consider this option.”
Lyman reiterated that the bus stops are likely the safest option available.
“The bus stops along the west side of Etna will still be there and we still encourage students to use those,” he added. “If they are on the bus, that is still the safest method to cross so we will continue to utilize those. Clearview, which is a loop and Good Neighbor Lane by the Etna Trading company will still be used.”
