SVI Radio Interview: Lxi Weber, Star Valley Arts Council

Lxi Weber, Executive Director of the Star Valley Arts Council, called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Tuesday, January 20 to provide details on the upcoming Oil Painting Portrait Workshop February 2-6, Figure Drawing February 4 and Watercolor Workshop April 24-25.

(0:00) Joining me live over the phone, (0:01) Executive Director of the Starbuddy Arts Council, (0:04) that’s Lexi Weber this morning. (0:05) Lexi, I appreciate your time as always. (0:07) Think we got to start with the incredible show (0:09) from BYU Young Ambassadors.

(0:11) That was a big hit, great show. (0:13) Hats off to the Arts Council for putting that together. (0:16) Thank you, it was so great.

(0:18) We were so happy with how well attended it was. (0:21) It’s the first time I’ve ever watched them perform. (0:24) We were just so pleased with how it all went.

(0:27) Well, just another example. (0:28) If you missed out, you really missed out. (0:29) So the next time a show like that comes around, (0:31) you got to go.

(0:32) That’s just what it is. (0:33) You got to be there for it. (0:35) So Lexi, let’s talk about what’s coming up (0:38) with the Arts Council, a couple of workshops.

(0:40) Let’s start with the Portrait Workshop in early February. (0:44) What’s this? (0:45) Yep, it’s a week-long oil painting workshop. (0:49) The whole first week of February, (0:51) this workshop teaches portraits and landscapes (0:54) using the old master’s techniques.

(0:56) It’s open to all skill levels, (0:59) but participants do need to at least (1:02) need to be relatively comfortable (1:04) with using oil as a medium. (1:08) This class is almost full. (1:10) We have more registrants for this session (1:12) than we’ve ever had before.

(1:13) This is our third time doing this workshop, (1:17) and people are just getting more and more interested in this (1:21) the more that we do it, (1:22) and so we’re really excited about that. (1:24) But we just have three spots left, (1:27) and so anyway, we just want people to, (1:29) if you’re interested, you’ve got to sign up now. (1:32) We have to cap it, so.

(1:34) Certainly. (1:34) You can find more information about this on our website. (1:37) We’ve got pictures from our previous workshops (1:41) so that people can get a good feel (1:42) for what kind of things they can expect, (1:45) and anyway, and register and all the information (1:47) on our website, starvalleyarts.org. (1:49) Excellent, so that’s February 2nd through the 6th.

(1:52) You also have, during that same time, (1:55) a figure drawing workshop, but I’m not artistic, (1:58) and so I think stick figures is kind of like (2:00) what I do with figure drawing. (2:01) I’m assuming this is a little more than that. (2:04) Yeah, so we just started this this month, (2:08) the first week of January, we had our first one, (2:11) and we were thrilled with the turnout, (2:12) especially because it was our first one.

(2:14) We had about 15 people show up, (2:16) and that was just a really casual session (2:19) without any instruction. (2:23) It just went really, really well, (2:24) and our next session, because it’s the same week (2:27) as that workshop, we will have that visiting artist here, (2:31) and he has agreed to give more of a formal instruction. (2:36) He is a great figure painter, figure drawer, (2:39) and so he is going to give any instruction (2:42) that people want to the attendees, (2:44) and it’s still gonna cost the same.

(2:46) It’s still that $10 for any registrants who want to come, (2:50) and so it’s just a great opportunity (2:54) to take advantage of while he’s here. (2:59) So we’re excited about that. (3:01) We have a suggested supply list on our website.

(3:04) We have a registration form on there. (3:06) Walk-ins are definitely welcome to come, (3:08) and we’ve had people do that, (3:10) but just having that head count for that registration, (3:13) it just helps us plan for setting up (3:15) and just making sure we have enough tables and chairs (3:17) and even that our room is big enough (3:19) for everyone who comes. (3:21) That’s just helpful.

(3:22) So again, registration details, (3:25) all the other information at starbodyarts.org. (3:27) The portrait workshop, February 2nd through the 6th, (3:30) and then during that same timeframe, (3:33) the figure drawing, February 4th. (3:35) Lexi Weber, Executive Director (3:36) of the Star Body Arts Council (3:37) on the Weekday Wake-up this morning. (3:38) Looking a little further ahead, Lexi, (3:40) sounds like you have another watercolor workshop (3:43) in the works.

(3:44) Yes. (3:46) So anyone who’s aware of our plein air events (3:49) that we do every September, (3:52) they’ve probably seen Lester Lee’s watercolors (3:56) if they go to our art sale and show. (4:00) He has joined us for the last few seasons of our event, (4:03) and his pieces are always the most popular, (4:06) both with the community and the judges.

(4:09) He’s just so incredible with his watercolor pieces. (4:13) And we have had so many community members (4:17) that have requested that we bring him to Star Valley (4:19) to teach a workshop. (4:21) And so that’s what we’re doing.

(4:23) He’s from Cache Valley, (4:25) and he was really excited when we asked him to come. (4:29) This is a two-day workshop. (4:31) It’s April 24th and 25th.

(4:33) That’s a Friday and a Saturday. (4:35) And it will be from nine to three each day, (4:38) and most likely going to be at the Afton Civic Center. (4:42) And it’s only $200 for the workshop.

(4:46) And then, as always, (4:48) you can find more information about that on our website. (4:51) Excellent. (4:51) That sounds like another great opportunity.

(4:54) Again, April 24th through the 25th. (4:56) Lexi, again, appreciate your time, as always. (4:58) Anything we missed? (5:00) Yes, I do have one more thing.

(5:02) About the figure drawing sessions, (5:05) we are always looking for models for that. (5:08) And we pay $60 a night, and that’s just two hours. (5:15) And so we have a registration form (5:17) on that same page on our website for the figure drawing.

(5:22) And our model from January said he had a great time (5:25) and he’d love to come back. (5:26) So that’s the feedback we have so far. (5:28) I love it.

(5:29) It’s just an easy way to make a little bit of money. (5:33) And you’re not doing anything on an evening, so. (5:36) Yeah, maybe we’ll just go sit there, right? (5:37) It really is.

(5:39) You just kind of sit there, right? (5:40) That’s all there is to it? (5:41) Yeah, you do. (5:41) You just sit there. (5:43) And we literally want every body.

(5:47) We want all shapes and sizes. (5:49) So anyone can do it. (5:51) Love it.

(5:52) Details online at starbodyarts.org. (5:54) Lexi, thank you for everything (5:55) that you and the Arts Council do. (5:56) Appreciate your time today. (5:59) Thank you.

(5:59) It’s all part of the weekday wake up this morning (6:01) on SVI Radio.
