Advocates for Multi-Use of Public Lands expanding trail access in Star Valley

Will Mook, Executive Director, and Dash Andrews, Programming Coordinator, from Advocates for Multi-Use of Public Lands (AMPL), shared their vision for expanding trail access in Star Valley.

Founded in 2017 amidst growing concerns over access to recreational areas, AMPL arose as a voice for varied outdoor enthusiasts. “We represent a broad coalition of users from motorized to non-motorized,” Mook explained, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to preserving riding areas and promoting inclusive recreational opportunities. After nearly a decade of advocacy, AMPL’s mission transcends lobbying; they are actively engaged in maintaining and enhancing public lands.

As Andrews spoke, his enthusiasm for the upcoming expansion into Star Valley was palpable. “We want everybody to have the best access possible. If you’re out there having a blast on your public lands, you’re gonna care about preserving them.” With a recent grant funded by dirt bike registration stickers, AMPL plans to deploy a dedicated crew to tackle trail maintenance across Lincoln County, ensuring that these cherished areas remain accessible to all.

The prospect of new adventures on the trails has local residents eagerly anticipating the summer. “These are some of the most spectacular single track trails in the country,” Andrews said. His passion for the outdoors was evident as he outlined their plans for clearing trails and maintaining ideal conditions, setting the stage for an unforgettable riding season.

However, the expansion into Star Valley isn’t just about maintenance; it’s a call to the community. Mook acknowledged the vital role the public plays in safeguarding the very lands they cherish. “The public does generally take care of their public lands,” he noted, reflecting on how local enthusiasts often pitch in, riding dirt bikes with chainsaws to help clear trails. This sense of stewardship breeds a collective responsibility, nurturing a community that truly invests in its natural surroundings.

For those eager to roll up their sleeves and get involved, Mook pointed them to AMPL’s website, where they can find information on volunteer opportunities and upcoming projects. It’s an invitation to become an integral part of the efforts to keep these landscapes vibrant and accessible.

As the conversation shifted to avalanche education, both Mook and Andrews stressed an essential point: safety must always come first. With current snowpack conditions in western Wyoming posing challenges for outdoor enthusiasts, Mook stressed the importance of taking precautions. “Before anybody goes into the backcountry, read that avalanche bulletin,” he urged. It’s a reminder that while adventure awaits, respect for the land and its conditions is paramount.

The future looks bright for AMPL and the Star Valley community. With their dedicated efforts, a revitalized network of trails is on the horizon, promising to offer both excitement and connection for residents and visitors alike. As summer approaches, the trails will once again become a gathering place for all who love the outdoors, uniting voices in a shared appreciation for the beauty of public lands.
