Anyone who has attempted to navigate the west alley of Afton’s main street knows it is a dicey situation and the businesses as well as the town offices themselves deal with it every day. It has been a long, complicated process to try and improve the area, but one that is moving forward according to town administrator Violet Sanderson.

“Pre-bids are now out for the west alley project,” she told SVI. “We’ve been planning on the updates for that alley for quite a while so we are excited about that. Official bids will need to be submitted by June 18.”

The plans for the improvement will be between 4th and 5th Avenues in the town.

“For those who have been trying to travel that in the past few years, it is pretty degraded,” Sanderson noted. “That is an easement that the town has for right of public access and the council has found it important to try and update that. The plan is to straighten out the alleyway and try and fix up the subsurface grading as well as pave that so we don’t have any dramatic potholes. It also gives us a chance to have a rolling curb to have better drainage as well.”
