DnDoggos: Spells Like Trouble by Scout Underhill is a fun and adventurous graphic novel that continues the exciting journey of the lovable DnDoggos crew. Filled with humor, friendship, magic, and action, this story draws readers back into the world of Tails Bend while introducing new challenges and mysteries for the characters to face. Fans of fantasy adventures and tabletop-inspired stories will enjoy following Magnus, Pickles, Tonka, and Zoey as they begin another unforgettable quest together.

The story begins shortly after the group’s previous adventure. Just when they think peace has returned, they learn that the villain they defeated has escaped and kidnapped the mayor. This immediately pulls the group back into danger and reminds readers that adventure is never far away for the DnDoggos. After their first battle, the team decides they need a moment to rest and recharge before continuing. In one of the book’s more humorous moments, they stop for corndogs at the Dancing Dog tavern, adding a lighthearted and cozy feel to the story.

At the Dancing Dog, the group meets with Skye, the tavern owner, who gives them a mysterious quest. She asks them to deliver a book to a friend living in the far north near Glacier Peak. However, she warns them not to open or read the book under any circumstances. This creates suspense and immediately makes readers curious about what secrets the book might hold. Before leaving, the group visits Beans N Blades to gather supplies for the freezing journey ahead. Their interaction with Pinto while preparing for the cold north helps expand the world and gives the story more charm and personality.

Once equipped, the adventure truly begins. Using secret phrases, the party is magically transported to the icy region of Glacier Peak. There, they meet Toast, a friendly feline who needs the mysterious book to continue her magical training. However, because magic is still unfamiliar to much of the party, things quickly begin to go wrong in amusing and unexpected ways.

One of the strongest parts of Spells Like Trouble is the balance between comedy and adventure. The characters are entertaining and easy to enjoy, and their teamwork makes the story engaging from beginning to end. The artwork and fantasy setting also help bring the world to life. Overall, this graphic novel is a charming continuation of the DnDoggos series and a wonderful read for fans of fantasy, humor, and magical adventures. Check it out at the Star Valley Branch Library.
