The Town of Thayne, in partnership with the Star Valley Arts Council, has issued a call for artists to complete three mural projects this fall. All three projects are on the Thayne Community Center building and grounds and offer compensation to the artist selected to complete each project.

Made possible by the Wyoming Arts Council, these projects are funded and facilitated by the Town of Thayne.  The SVAC is tasked with issuing the call and informing the public of project details but has no part in determining the winning applicant.

“This is an exciting opportunity for artists to leave a lasting mark on our community,” said Lxi Weber, Executive Director of the SVAC. “Public art has a way of creating pride, sparking conversations, and giving people something beautiful to experience every day.”

Open to artists of all experience levels, the calls offer an opportunity to emerging and professional artists who are local or from outside Wyoming, though preference may be given to artists with ties to the region. Emerging and underrepresented artists are encouraged to apply.

Artists are welcome to apply for one or all the projects. Separate proposals for each project are due August 16, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Selected artists will be notified by August 20, 2026, and the projects must be completed by October 31, 2026.

License Plate Mural Project

This project will depict a pre-designed Wyoming license plate mural on the exterior south wall of the Thayne Community Center. This design is provided by the Town of Thayne and only requires the artist to apply the paint in accordance with the design.  A stipend of $2000 is allotted to the winning artist for this project.

Photo Op Mural Project

According to starvalleyarts.org, this project will require an artist to design and paint a new photo opportunity mural on the south exterior wall of the Thayne Community Center.  Starvalleyarts.org states, “This mural will serve as a fun, interactive backdrop where community members and visitors can stop to take photos.”

The selected artist will be responsible for creating an original design for this space. As this new mural will be alongside an existing mural on the Community Center, “artists are encouraged to develop a color palette that complements the current artwork,” states the website. “Using similar colors may also allow the project to make use of the Town’s existing paint inventory.”

The winning artist for this project will receive a stipend of $3,000 for design and creation of the mural. “Designs will be evaluated on creativity, visual impact, suitability as a photo backdrop, and compatibility with the existing mural,” states the website.

• Storage Shed Mural Project

This project requires an artist to design and paint a mural that transforms the Community Center’s storage shed into a public work of art and promises a $5,600 stipend. According to the website, “rather than treating each side as a separate mural, artists should create one cohesive design that wraps around all four sides of the shed,” involving the entire exterior of the building.

“The selected artist will be responsible for creating an original design for the entire shed,” states starvalleyarts.org. “Applications must include renderings showing each side of the structure and how the overall design connects to create one unified mural.”

“Each project offers something different,” said Weber. “One is based on a completed design, while the others invite artists to create something entirely original. We hope that variety encourages artists with different styles and experience levels to apply.”
