Long thought of as one of the most prolific offenses in the country, the BYU Cougars were a shell of their former selves this past season scoring 20 points or less in nine of their 13 games. It was for this reason that former Heisman Trophy winner and offensive coordinator, Ty Detmer was “relieved of his duties” by head coach Kalani Sitake.

ESPN reported that Detmer had been fired Monday morning, but according to a report from KSL, the school stated that the new coordinator will make decisions regarding the offensive staff once they are hired so for now he technically remains under contract.

Over the last two seasons, BYU has gone (13-13) which included a dismal (4-9) campaign in 2017 that included a seven-game losing streak and embarrassing losses to East Carolina and UMass. There were also blowout losses to ranked teams Wisconsin and LSU and a pair of rivalry losses to Utah and Utah State.

The Cougars did win two of their last three games including a 30-20 victory on the road in Hawaii to wrap up the regular season.

According to the university the search for a new offensive coordinator will begin immediately.
