Braves and Devils tie; Lady Braves pick up victory over Evanston

As teams try and solidify their positions heading into the 4A West Regional Tournament in Evanston next week, the level of play felt urgent as the Red Devils invaded Afton on Tuesday night for Star Valley’s final home match of the season.

In the boys varsity match, the teams had a very entertaining match that remained largely scoreless until the final moments of regulation.

In the 75th minute Wyatt Dunn broke the stalemate on a smooth assist from Brant Nelson to put the Braves up late in the contest.

Needing a hero in the dying embers of the match, Evanston found one as Micah Liechty was able to put in a stellar shot with less than 15 seconds remaining in regulation and force overtime with the score 1-1.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the two overtime periods but none of them crossed the goal line as they were forced to settle for the tie. Evanston’s record moved to (6-5-2) overall while Star Valley’s record moved to (3-7-1). The Braves final regular season game will be against the Jackson Broncs (11-1) on Thursday evening in Teton County.

The junior varsity game was won by Star Valley with a 3-1 score.

In the girls varsity match both teams were scoreless heading toward halftime before Emma Thomson found the back of the net on a free kick from the 20-yard line in the 34th minute to give the Lady Braves the lead at intermission.

The weather got western at the half with rain and sleet peppering the players in the final 40 minutes. Although Star Valley controlled the ball, the Devils had a prime effort to tie the match with seven minutes remaining as Quetzalli Penaloza made a run at Star Valley keeper, Addie Butler and got the past the sliding effort but the tying shot was sent away by McKenna Brog who was playing the net which helped preserve the win. The Devils fell to (3-7-3)

The Lady Braves improved to (4-7-1) and will wrap up their regular season in Jackson on Thursday where they will try for a season sweep of the Jackson Lady Broncs (9-3) after upsetting their rivals in Afton.
