Joe Heward Of Thayne Rec Talks Adult Flag Football League Coming Soon To the Valley?
Joe Heward of the Thayne Rec center joined Aaron and Dahl this previous Friday for an interview regarding what is going down recreational sports wise in Thayne for First Bank of Wyoming Sports Friday. He started off by stating that youth basketball is in full force at this time and for the first time in league history the youth league was able to sustain several all girls teams which Joe was very excited about.
Adult recreational stuff is also going strong as well however with adult Volleyball league signups continuing until Feb 13th next week and the season beginning in March with games being played in both Thayne and Etna and a corn hole tournament is currently in the works for this coming summer. The big coming attraction though is the addition of adult flag football coming this summer which should be a big hit for the Thayne Rec center by the estimation of Joe Heward.
The big thing that will allow this to happen this year unlike previous years is the addition of new lights to the Star Valley High School athletic field meaning the old lights are being donated to Thayne Rec for use for night games so the games can be scheduled with much more flexibility now than in previous years. The other big thing for Thayne Rec across all sports is alway volunteers, Joe goes into detail regarding the huge need for volunteers for the youth sports in particular as far as coaches and time keepers and things of that nature go, no experience is needed to volunteer just a willingness to help the kids enjoy themselves and want to continue playing the sport for years to come.
Heward is also particularly proud of the growth that the Thayne Rec youth program has shown over the past decade or so, with the prime example being the youth soccer program had just over 100 kids 10 years ago but this year they have over 300 kids in the youth Soccer league. “My ultimate goal in all the sports is that the kids just want to play again next year” Heward said in regards to his goals for the league, “its a winning season if every kid on the team wants to come back and play again the next year”.
