Two hunters, a father and son, were rescued by emergency responders after rolling their truck down a steep hillside west of Big Piney early Tuesday morning.

Tip Top Search & Rescue in Sublette County said the father and son were hunting on BLM land when the accident happened. Both were ejected and landed in a congested aspen grove. The father was eventually able to call for help around 3:00 a.m. He told dispatch that his son was injured and needed medical help but he didn’t know where they were. Dispatch operators were able to ping the father’s cell phone to obtain coordinates.

“The interoperability of all agencies involved and major physical efforts by first responders were essential in the injured juvenile being packaged into a litter and a mechanical raise was performed with the use of Sublette County Fire’s capstan rope winch,” stated Tip Top Search & Rescue. “Members of all agencies assisted the litter as it was raised to the top of the 40-yard hill and then carried the injured to the awaiting helicopter for transportation to Idaho Falls for treatment.”

Sublette County Fire, EMS and Sheriff’s Office along with Air Idaho all responded to the scene along with Search & Rescue. No details on injuries were reported.
