Bridger-Teton National Forest Kemmerer Ranger District promotes Outdoor Discovery Day
Adam Calkins with the Bridger-Teton National Forest Kemmerer Ranger District is promoting the third annual Outdoor Discovery Day Saturday September 7th from 10 AM to 2 PM at Triangle Park in Kemmerer and is free to attend.
He says they created this event to give kids the opportunity to come learn about the outdoors through hands-on activities. He says they didn’t want it to be like a trade show though where you move from booth to booth looking at goods people try to sell.
“So, what we’ve created is an event where kids can come down,” Calkins said. “We have our biggest year ever this year with over 17 booths that are going to be set up. Each one of those partners is required to have a hands-on activity that they do for the kids.”
He says, for example, Trout Unlimited will be there and to provide instructions on how to fly fish. He says the Bureau of Land Management will be there to give examples on how to recreate safely. He also says Wyoming Game and Fish will be there to train on animal, tracking, and pelt identification.
“We’ll have the fire engine down here again,” Calkins said. “So, kids can spray water from the fire engine which is always a great time.”
He says starting at 12:30 PM there will begin a party to celebrate the 80th birthday for Smokey Bear.
“There’s going to be cake, there’s going to be cupcakes,” Calkins said. “A whole bunch of other celebration items that are going to be down here.”
He says that will be after a lunch that will be provided by Rigby’s and Kemmerer Operations. There will also be other local support there from the county and the town. The Kemmerer Parks and Recreation will provide support as well. He says the Kemmerer Rotary will be serving the food which he says, “will be no small task”.
He says when you arrive you should check with the Forest Service booth, and they will get you all set up for the event.
