• Local Event Highlights Mental Health Awareness and Support in the Fight Against Suicide

On Saturday, September 28, the scenic Intermittent Spring in Afton served as the backdrop for a meaningful suicide awareness walk, organized by local advocate Cassie Clinger Moon. The event sought to honor those lost to suicide while fostering open discussions about mental health, bringing together 11 adults and eight children.

Attendee Alayna Hallmark voiced her concerns about the rising incidence of suicide in the community. “I really think that suicide is a significant issue here, especially given the stigma surrounding mental health. It’s okay to feel bad sometimes,” she passionately stated. “This walk is about building community and spreading awareness so we can tackle these problems together.”

Participants found comfort in Wyoming’s beautiful landscape, each with their own reasons for attending. Some came to remember loved ones lost to suicide, while others sought connection with those who have faced similar struggles or reflected on their own mental health journeys.

Organizer Cassie expressed her commitment to raising awareness about mental health, particularly during National Suicide Awareness Month in September. She chose the Intermittent Spring for its tranquility and accessibility, ensuring everyone could join. “It was so relaxing and beautiful,” she noted, thrilled with the turnout and the meaningful connections that emerged throughout the walk.

Looking ahead, Cassie plans to host monthly events, with larger gatherings scheduled for May and September to further promote mental health awareness. As the day wrapped up, the Afton community stood united in its mission to combat suicide, creating a nurturing environment where individuals can seek support and share their stories.
