Afton Airport plans for growth

• New construction expected this summer

In a recent interview on the Weekday Wake-Up, Ryan Lyman, Chairman of the Afton Lincoln County Airport, discussed plans for the airport’s future. A master plan outlining various developments suggests that Afton residents may see changes to the airport’s infrastructure in the coming years.

Construction on additional taxiways is set to begin this summer at the northern end of the airport, near the hangars. Lyman noted that this will be the first step in a larger initiative, stating, “Over the next few years, we will continue to add taxiways.” He painted the picture more specifically by sharing that the master plan extends to areas behind the Sinclair gas station.

Another aspect of the airport’s development is the proposed Afton Skyranches, a four-lot subdivision on the west side of the airport. This project is currently undergoing regulatory reviews, and Lyman mentioned that developers must meet various requirements before proceeding.

While discussing the airport’s future, Lyman acknowledged the challenge of balancing expansion with community concerns. “It’s difficult for our residents to see a lot more air traffic,” he remarked. He also pointed out that the airport’s runway and taxiway improvements are primarily funded by the FAA and WYDOT Aeronautical programs. Lyman compared the runway’s role to that of Highway 89, stating, “We can’t tell people that their vehicle is too big, too wide, or too loud to run on the highway, and essentially that is what the airport is.”

Interestingly, Lyman mentioned that there are no restrictions preventing pilots from landing larger aircraft, such as a 747, at the airport, although safety considerations would be paramount. “Our airport’s dimensions are relatively similar to others in Idaho and Wyoming,” he noted, indicating its capabilities.
