April storm blasts Wyoming

Another round of snow is blasting Wyoming Monday and Tuesday, adding to an already record winter, closing multiple roads and adding to the spring flooding concerns.

Over one foot of snow fell in Star Valley and surrounding areas Monday night. No official snowfall totals have yet been reported, as of 7:00 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service reported that during the 24 hour span on Monday, April 3, the City of Casper received 26.7 inches of snow, an all-time daily snowfall record of any day of the year. The previous record in Casper was 24.3 inches on December 24, 1982.

The winter storm has forced the closure of a large portion of Wyoming’s roads. I-80 from Evanston to Cheyenne was closed Tuesday morning, along with most roads around Casper and central and southern Wyoming. The most up-to-date road conditions can be found at WyoRoad.info. Below is the current road map as of 7:00 a.m.

The latest round of snow ads to impending flooding concerns for the spring. On Monday, Lincoln County Emergency management released updated information regarding flood potential. In the days following the storm temperatures are expected to rise. Forecasts for Star Valley heading into the weekend and early next week calls for highs near 60 degrees. A rapid spring warming cycle with the record amounts of snowfall are all building up to what could result in large flooding in Star Valley and surrounding areas.
