Star Valley and Pinedale claim team titles at Dave Draney Invite

A span of several days that had rain and mud dousing the spirits of area residents finally broke just in time for the 2019 version of the Star Valley Invitational named for Dave Draney on Wednesday, April 17.

With temperatures in the upper 30’s and low 40’s for the meet it wasn’t exactly warm, but rather warm enough.

A total of 12 teams were in attendance and completed a full slate of events at Star Valley High School and represented nearly every team from Southwest Wyoming.

In the team standings, Pinedale High School won the girls competition with 108.0 points. Isabella Romasko won the 100 meter dash, the triple jump and the 300 meter hurdles for the Lady Wranglers who also got event championships from Madison Friend in the pole vault and Adriana Liserio in the long jump.

Lyman was second in the girls standings with 98.0 teams points, buoyed by a trio of event titles from UW-bound McKinley Bradshaw who won the high jump, the discus and the shot put. Star Valley was a close third with 95.5 team points with the Lady Braves going 1-2 in the200 meter dash behind Hannah Christie and Sarah McKen. Shay Erickson won the 400 meter dash and McKenna Brog won the 100 meter hurdles.

The Cokeville Panthers were fourth with 77.5 points, winning both the 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays. Evanston rounded out the top five with 63.0 points.

 

The Pinedale Girls and the Star Valley Boys won the team titles in Afton on Wednesday.

Star Valley handily won the boys team title with 118.0 points. Wyatt Moore generated the buzz of the day as he broke a 31-year old school record in the 100-meter dash with a blistering time of 10.67 seconds. This broke the previous mark of 10.73 set by Matt Hansen set in 1988. Moore also won the long jump and helped the Braves win the 1600 Sprint Medley. Asefa Wetzel and Peter Visser went 1-2 in the 800 meter run and Noah Draney won the 3200 meter run.

Evanston was second in the boys standings with 88.5 points despite not winning a single event but scoring points across a wide spectrum. Rock Springs was third with 67.0 points behind a pair of event titles in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles from Cole Goich. Teton High School out of Driggs, Idaho was fourth with 62.5 points and Cokeville placed fifth with 61.5 points as they dominated the 4 x 400 meter relay, claiming two of the top three teams.
