Teton County Fire Marshal Kathy Clay has determined the cause of last week’s barn fire on Bedstraw Lane off of South Park Ranch Road.
The barn had a section used as a chicken coop for nine birds, and that is where the fire began.
“The chickens, while settling in for the evening to roost, most likely dislodged a hanging heat lamp, which ignited combustibles on the floor of the roost area,” said Clay.
The cause of the fire was a challenge to investigate since the barn was deemed a total loss. Jackson Hole Fire/EMS crews were able to contain the fire to the barn and protect the other structures on the property.
According to the homeowners, only one chicken died as a result of the fire.
