Competition for varsity spots highlight initial golf outing

• Teams open season at Green River with solid scores

In a radio interview with SVHS Golf coach Kelly Fullmer on First Bank of Wyoming Sports Friday, he mentioned that Star Valley has very good internal competition this season and that despite being one of the smaller 4A schools, the program is able to fill out a competitive golf card. After looking at the final results from Green River this past week, his words had some tangible data as seven of the 12 girls teams competing didn’t have enough for a full team score and two of the boys programs had the same problem.

Meanwhile, the Lady Braves were only 15 strokes from the top spot with a third place finish while the Braves were fourth overall. But both teams have multiple players vying for the final varsity spots moving forward.

“We had a great tournament in Green River with solid performances from everyone,” Fullmer replied. “Jordyn (Horsley) took second individually and Aiden DeCora, Sean Stout, and Kambree Johnson all finished just outside the top ten.  All the rest of the team were solidly in the middle of the pack. Our boys team moved up three spots on day two and both teams improved their second day team score.”

Horsley, as expected, carried the top score for the Lady Braves and finished only behind Tazlyn Wagner of Kemmerer. Paylan Merritt, Kate Ricks and Amelia Green were all battling for the third varsity score. Evanston’s Ryker Lind took the individual honors for the boys division. The Braves had all eight of their golfers within 18 strokes of each other top to bottom including Bran Fullmer and Braxton Johnson just one stroke out from the fifth varsity score.

“We were pleased with the grit our kids showed the second day of the tournament,” Fullmer added. “In 20 years, we have not had this much parity on our boys team. “We’re deep and competitive for the top five varsity spots.”

The junior varsity players hosted an event on Monday in Afton with the program headed to Pinedale this Thursday and Friday.
