Caribou-Targhee National Forest to Begin Fourth Hollow Prescribed Burn

Weather permitting, the Caribou-Targhee National Forest will begin a prescribed burn operation the week of June 10 in Bear Lake County approximately six miles northwest of Paris, Idaho. Fire crews are targeting approximately 182 acres of sub-alpine slashing in the project area. Preparation for the event is likely to occur June 7-9 with firefighters black-lining the unit area to provide a safe fire line to burn off of.

“Fire has always played an important role in the ecosystem,” said Mike Duncan, Montpelier District Ranger. “Prescribed burns allow us to mimic the healthy benefits of fire in a controlled environment.”

The purpose of the Fourth Hollow prescribed fire is twofold. First, the forest hopes to encourage the new growth of native vegetation to regenerate wildlife habitat. Second, the controlled burn will reduce the amount of hazardous fuels in the area, which will reduce wildfire intensity should a fire start.

Weather conditions, topography, fuel types and available resources determine how and when a prescribed burn may take place. Fire crews anticipate completing the main ignition the week of June 10 should conditions allow.
