Idaho cancels remainder of school year

The following is a statement from Superintendent Gary Brogan, Bear Lake County School District

Yesterday the Idaho State Board of Education extended the soft closure that we are currently under through the rest of the academic school year. They did however, leave the door open to allow school to resume if social distancing orders are lifted. They are planning on developing criteria for that to happen in their next meeting on April 13, 2020.

What this means for the Bear Lake School District is that we will continue to instruct students on line as we have for a little over two weeks. We also will continue to serve lunches as we have since school was released in March.

I know that online education has been a challenge for parents and students. I have spoken with many parents and have had lots of praise from them on how the process has gone. Most parents have expressed how their students want to be in school. I think as educators, we would echo those feelings.

In these difficult times we are called on to accomplish challenging tasks. The safety and success of our students rank highest of all our priorities. Students need to know that it is essential for them to work hard and complete their assignments. They need to treat this situation with the same importance as they would if they were in a brick and mortar school every day. If they are struggling with concepts or lessons, I strongly encourage them to reach out to your teachers for help. We will continue to make adjustments to our system to enhance the learning process as necessary.
To our students I say, You CAN do this. Years from now you will look back on this experience and know that it was something unique to only a certain generation that you were a part of. Be positive and take the opportunity to make the most of the situation we find ourselves in.

Work hard, and be safe,
Superintendent Gary Brogan
