In a recent appearance on the Weekday Wake-Up, House District 21 Representative McKay Erickson highlighted his ongoing efforts on the House Education Committee and addressed pressing issues surrounding property tax reform.

Erickson emphasized his commitment to enhancing educational opportunities: “We’re working hard to establish new avenues for parent choice.” He believes that expanding educational options is essential for families in his district.

Regarding property tax, Erickson noted that two significant bills are currently under consideration. One proposed measure suggests a 50% cut in property tax rates for homes valued up to $1 million. While this reduction sounds beneficial, Erickson cautioned about its implications: “It has no backfill and directly impacts established programs.” He stressed that the proposed tax relief could inadvertently undermine vital educational and various other resources.

“I often say, I can’t go home unless we have some property tax relief,” he remarked, emphasizing his dedication to addressing constituents’ financial concerns. However, he also recognized the importance of maintaining a balanced budget, noting, “We have the resources; we just need to balance that out.”

With a record of 763 bills currently numbered during this session, Erickson acknowledged the challenge of addressing such a large volume. “There’s no way we’ll have time for them all; maybe 200 will be considered,” he stated. His strategy involves focusing on major bills that could significantly impact his constituents.

Erickson highlighted the pressing issue of job vacancies in Wyoming, noting that around 600 positions remain unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates. He also mentioned ongoing discussions regarding regulations for fishing boats on crowded streams, which aim to ensure safety and sustainability.

As the legislative session progresses, Erickson remains committed to advocating for his district’s needs.
