Day One of the 4A West Regional Volleyball tournament is in the books as teams from the region converged on Green River High School on Friday, October 27.
Opening up the action, the Lady Braves overcame a slow start to recover and beat Rock Springs 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-13).
The win advanced them to the semifinals where they ran into perennial championship contender Kelly Walsh who defeated Green River 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-16).
The Trojans swept Star Valley in Casper last month. The Lady Braves had another slow start which cost them the first set, 17-25 but came back with an impressive Set 2 win, 25-15. Star Valley fell behind again after a 17-25 Set 3 loss and Set 4 was a thriller with Kelly Walsh winning 25-23. The win qualified the Trojans for next week’s State tournament and puts them into the Regional championship.
On the other side of the bracket, Riverton outlasted Jackson in five sets while Cody swept Evanston. The Fillies then beat the Wolverines in four.
Saturday will open up with Rock Springs playing Green River at 9 a.m. and Jackson playing Evanston at 10:30. The winners of those matches will play Riverton and Star Valley respectively at 12 noon and 1:30. The losers will see their season come to an end.
Join SVI as they bring you Star Valley coverage from the tournament with Brandy Taylor and Patience Jenkins and the match at 1:30 p.m. A win would qualify the Lady Braves for State next week and they would play again at 3 p.m. for third place seeding.
