The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) provides both guaranteed loan financing and grant funding to agricultural producers and rural small businesses for renewable energy systems or to make energy efficiency improvements. Agricultural producers may also apply for new energy efficient equipment and new system guaranteed loans for agricultural production and processing.

Grants can cover up to 50% of the total eligible project cost. Loan guarantees on loans up to 75% of total eligible project cost.

Projects must be located in rural areas with populations of 50,000 residents or less.

Renewable Energy Systems (grant min. $2,500; max. $1 million) : Funds may be used for the purchase and installation of renewable energy systems, such as: solar generation, wind generation, geothermal for electric generation or direct use, or biomass (for example: biodiesel and ethanol, anaerobic digesters, and solid fuels).

Energy Efficiency Upgrades (grant min. $1,500; max. $500,000): Funds may be used for the purchase, installation and construction of energy efficiency improvements, such as: lighting, insulation, doors and windows, HVAC, replacement of energy-inefficient equipment, or switching from a diesel to electric irrigation motor.

With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) has been provided over $2 billion for renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvement grants for agricultural producers and rural small business owners through 2031.

Prior to the webinar, we encourage interested applicants to establish a SAM.gov account. SAM registration is a requirement when submitting a REAP application. Visit the System for Award Management (SAM) webpage to complete your registration. Neither the SAM or REAP applications cost money, but they can take time so be sure to get this taken care of right away. If you are already registered with these systems, you do not need to do it again.

If you would like to request a REAP application or have questions about the webinar, please contact Miles Benzel (Miles.Benzel@usda.gov) at (307) 683-4191 or Cynthia Dettloff (Cynthia.Dettloff@usda.gov) at (307) 233-6716.
