Weekend Sports Recap: February 8-10

The regular season is winding down as teams hit the home stretch during the winter season. Here’s a look at where they stand heading into the next week.

WRESTLING

The Lady Braves had a smaller dual against Evanston on Thursday, February 8, and came away with an 18-18 tie.

The Braves put together a great effort as they defeated a good Red Devil team, 55-19.

The wrestling teams will be in Casper for the 4A West Regionals on Saturday February 17 held at Kelly Walsh High School.

BASKETBALL

It was a tough weekend for the Lady Braves who hosted both Kelly Walsh and Rock Springs over the weekend. On Friday night, Star Valley jumped out to an 11-point lead and a 20-point first quarter against the Trojans. As it turned out the lead would not hold as Kelly Walsh chipped away until the two teams went to overtime. The Trojans made more plays in the extra stanza to take the game, 65-60. Kenlee Engelhardt had a career-high 31 points in the losing effort.

On Saturday, the Lady Braves could not put things together as they were overwhelmed by turnovers in a 41-29 loss. Emily Dana scored 13 points.

The girls will have a chance to bounce back this upcoming week as they travel to Jackson for a Friday night tilt and then return home to host the Evanston Red Devils.

The Braves had a good weekend as they extended their win streak to 11 games and improved their record to 15-3 with a pair of wins. First on Friday, the team jumped out to a double-digit lead on Kelly Walsh but ended up fending off the Trojans in a 54-49 final. Cooper Lancaster led the team with 15 points. Max Jensen finished with 14. Simon Gaskell pulled down 14 rebounds.

On Saturday Star Valley kept their foot on the gas pedal as they pulled away from the Tigers for a 70-51 final. PJ Horsley led the team with 17, Simon Gaskell with 13 points and 9 rebounds including a crowd-pleasing dunk early in the fourth quarter, Cooper Lancaster finished with 12 and Dylan Shumway had 10.

The Jackson chapter of the Snake River Shootout is Friday night in Teton County before the Braves return home to host Evanston on Saturday.
