What You’ll Need To Start Living off the Grid

Life’s becoming a little faster—speedier than the pace you’re used to going. When life moves fast, sometimes you must stop and ponder if this is how you’d like to live. Many consider the idea of living off the grid, but you don’t honestly know what you’ll need to start until you’ve researched this list and more.

You Need a Power Source

Everything that creates electricity forms connection points via satellite, and powering your electronics requires a power source. Without a power source, you’re limited in your newfound life.

Let’s take a lesson from groups that live without electricity, like the Amish. They have transcended many generations without electricity, but they needed slight upgrades to adapt and not overindulge in technology, so some of these groups use solar panels.

To live off the grid, you’ll need something that generates power, such as solar panels. Solar power creates energy from the sun, a proven technology that’s better for the climate. Learn all you can about how portable solar power works before going on your own.

Find a Good Place for Shelter

A shelter could be a tent, RV, camper, or cabin in the woods. Wherever your cover is, ensure it’s safe and has room to start a new life. When you’re looking around, learn about the climate—does it rain often? Secure your home with drains and gutters to keep water from pooling around your home.

If the climate is dry, you’ll need to be near a watering hole because your resource options are scarce. An RV or camper is the best shelter option since they have air condition units that easily mount to the walls.

Prep Your Emergency Supplies

If something bad happens or you need to leave because of an emergency, have the essentials packed. You should not bring any electronics or unnecessary items, such as a book.

Keep your emergency supplies stocked with maps of emergency exits, an evacuation plan, and plenty of backup water and food. Keep a flashlight close by with tools and a device to keep track of weather conditions.

Stock Up on Food

Food is necessary for survival, especiall when living off the grid. There are ways to learn how to store food long-term, even in an emergency. Keep your stock filled with non-perishables, such as airtight glass jars full of nuts and dehydrated fruits. We recommend strawberries, bananas, and cranberries. Build a storage room for your food to live off through the harsh, cold seasons.

An important reason to learn about the things you need to start living off the grid is to live peacefully and securely. A remote life is difficult, but it’s achievable with the right advice and resilience, so prepare and learn all you can before leaving for a quieter lifestyle.
