• Hosted by Free07 and Star Valley Cornhole at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds
Free07 is hosting a community cornhole tournament as a benefit for a local family facing difficult financial circumstances. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 8 in the South exhibition hall at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds. Registration doors open at 5:30 p.m. and competition begins at 6.
The family that this event benefits is “fighting cancer right now,” said Free07 representative Kevin Turner. “Every little bit helps.” Proceeds from the tournament will go towards family travel costs and “whatever they need. As a community we really come together to show a lot of support for folks like this. It’s awesome. We get a lot of support from everybody.”
Star Valley Cornhole is managing the event from the Scoreholio App and providing cornhole boards, but each participant must bring their own bags. Sloppy Joe meals will be available for purchase from a small group of high school students who are fundraising for a summer trip they are taking with their school organization.
This is the fourth year that Free07 has been working to provide relief to local families through fundraising events. “The first year, we did a spaghetti dinner,” Turner said. For the last two years, the group has hosted a pinewood derby, and will provide one again on March 22 at the Fun Zone in Afton.
As part of the cornhole tournament and derby, Free07 is raffling three firearms and a set of custom cornhole boards, as well as several other smaller items of interest. “We’ll have a silent auction at both of these events and we’ll have a 50/50 raffle at both events. We only have 100 tickets for the one rifle so if we sell out those tickets by the time the cornhole tournament starts, we’ll do a drawing there. Otherwise, everything will roll over to the derby and we’ll finish up the big-ticket items with the drawings at the Pinewood Derby.”
The cornhole tournament is a cash only event. Registration at the door, food purchases, and all raffle and auction items must be purchased with cash.
Lindsay Kallgren, who also works with Free07 explained that the small group was organized to help “take care of the community in a simple way” by organizing fundraisers. “We have tried to do at least one a year and it has turned out to be the pinewood derby. We’re wanting to add a few more here and there as long as we can find the time and places to do it. We would like to be able to do more than we’re currently doing,” but the team of 10-15 volunteers needs more “hands on deck” to accomplish more. “Sometimes we’re spread a little thin, but you do what you can for to help somebody out.”
