Spring Sports teams open 2025 schedules this weekend

The track and field teams as well as the soccer teams from Star Valley High School will compete in their first action of the 2025 season this week.

The track and field team will be at the Malad Invitational on Thursday, May 20, to open things up. The track team will be powered by the distance crew including not one but two senior standouts in Jase Burton and Habi Wetzel. In addition, Sullivan Wilson and Colton Cranney will help fill out what should be a formidable quartet in any of the distance events. The Braves finished 8th in the Wyoming 4A state meet in 2024, scoring 39.0 points.

The Lady Braves have big shoes to fill points-wise with the departure of Valerie Jirak and Kammi Merritt. The top finish for the indoor season came from Abigale Carillo-Zarate who looks to be a cinch to set a new school record in the shot put which has stood since 2008. Alexis Angell and others from the distance events should also be in contention to score points in two months’ time. The girls team finished fifth last season with 57.0 team points.

The track team has one scheduled home meet on Thursday, April 24, as they will have the annual Dave Draney Invitational.

SOCCER

The SVHS footballers will be on the visiting pitch for the first month of the season, opening up their 2025 campaign in the Oil City to face Kelly Walsh this Friday and Natrona County on Saturday.

The Lady Braves are trying to build themselves back into a squad that gets back to the state tournament, something they haven’t been able to do since 2019. (There was no 2020 tournament due to COVID-19). The last win in the state tournament was in 2018 in the 3A classification.

The Braves will be looking to return to state this year after a heartbreaking shootout loss on their home turf to Natrona County last season. It snapped an 11-season streak of qualifying for the state tournament for the program minus the lost season of 2020.

The girls and boys take on the Trojans at 4p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively on Friday and then will face Natrona County at 10 a.m. and 12 noon on Saturday.

The SVHS soccer teams will play matches at Rock Springs, Green River and Evanston before playing five straight games at home from April 12-29. The girls will play one more consecutive home match on May 1.

The 4A West Regionals will take place in Green River starting May 15.
