SVI Radio Interview: Mayor Eric Green – Town of Alpine

Mayor Eric Green with the Town of Alpine called into the Weekday Wake-Up on Wednesday, May 6 for his monthly report. Mayor Green discussed the hiring of a Town Administrator, discussions regarding the sale of fireworks within the town and planned celebrations for America 250.

(0:01) This is the weekday wake up on SVI Radio 8.36 this morning on Swift 98 and the Spur heading (0:11) into the first guest interview segment of this eight o’clock hour this morning in town (0:14) of Alpine Mayor Eric Green on the air with his monthly report from the town of Alpine (0:19) Mayor Green. (0:20) How’s the very north end of Lincoln County looking today? (0:24) Oh, it’s gorgeous day today, dude. (0:26) Thanks for having me on.

(0:28) Yeah, I think that storm went through yesterday and everyone’s picking up all the sticks in (0:34) the yard right now. (0:35) But yeah, it looks like it’s gonna be a gorgeous day. (0:38) Love it.

(0:38) Absolutely. (0:39) So, Mayor, let’s talk about things happening within the town of Alpine. (0:43) First, there was the town council meeting last night.

(0:45) Anything from there that you’d like to bring up and summarize from last night’s meeting? (0:50) Yeah, I think the main thing is that we announced that we have offered the position of town (0:59) administrator to a local resident. (1:02) Her name is Riley Havorka and she’s accepted. (1:05) So she’s going to be taking over, kind of transitioning out of a role that she has up (1:10) at the town of Jackson and be full time at the end of June.

(1:15) So we’re very excited about that. (1:18) With the town of Alpine, how fast it’s growing, everything we have going on, it’s been something (1:23) that the town has needed for quite a while. (1:26) And I’m here to tell you that we’ve got it in place and we’re super excited about Riley (1:33) starting at the end of the month.

(1:35) Absolutely. (1:36) In June, actually. (1:37) Okay, in June.

(1:38) So, administrator, of course, quite a few of the municipalities across the county have (1:42) one. (1:42) But maybe remind us what her role will be and what she’ll do day-to-day for the town (1:48) as administrator. (1:49) Yeah.

(1:50) So, as probably a lot of your listeners know, most of the towns, small towns in Wyoming, (1:57) the mayor pretty much runs the town, hiring, firing, coming up with agendas, kind of leading (2:07) the town in a direction. (2:09) And when you hire an administrator, a lot of those duties can be put on to the, taken (2:17) away from the mayor, so to speak, and the administrator can take that on. (2:21) And then you have someone that works full time for the town doing those things instead (2:26) of having the mayor, who is typically busy with other things, be responsible for those.

(2:34) So it’s a really good thing for the town. (2:37) And I think the residents in the town of Alpine will find that Riley’s leadership will help (2:46) take the way that we govern to the next level, for sure. (2:51) Mayor Eric Green on the weekday wake up this morning with the town of Alpine.

(2:54) Mayor, I know this is going back a few weeks, but I understand there was a fireworks discussion (2:59) that had happened in the town of Alpine regarding how the town is going to move forward with (3:03) fireworks. (3:04) Maybe tell us what that discussion was on and what’s going to be the next steps there (3:07) and what decision may be made. (3:10) Yeah, for sure.

(3:11) So as we know, Lincoln County is, everyone loves to shoot their fireworks and we’ve been (3:20) talking about it for six months off and on. (3:23) You know, do we want to pull back on the sale of fireworks? (3:28) Because typically it’s the residents aren’t the ones that are buying the fireworks and (3:32) setting them off. (3:33) It’s the tourists and the people that are visiting.

(3:37) So obviously, a major forest fire is our biggest concern that fireworks would start something (3:46) and then it would be catastrophic. (3:48) So the conversation has been, should we pull back on selling of fireworks? (3:54) People will still, I’m sure, go shoot them off, even though it’s illegal to shoot them (3:59) off in the town of Alpine, in the Bureau of Rec, in the forest, all those places it’s (4:05) illegal to shoot off fireworks, but it still happens. (4:07) The enforcement obviously is the difficult thing.

(4:11) So we really haven’t had much pushback from the residents. (4:15) We’ve got a lot of people that emailed in saying, we traveled to the town of Alpine (4:21) around the 4th of July and it just wouldn’t be the same if we weren’t able to shoot off (4:25) our fireworks. (4:26) So I think we were considering putting something in place before the 4th of July this year, (4:33) but we heard from several of the people that put up those temporary tents, either at Brolin’s (4:39) or at KJ’s, and they’ve already purchased all their inventory for the year.

(4:45) So I don’t think it would be fair for them to put that in place for this year, but it’s (4:49) something we’re seriously considering for the future. (4:52) So we’re looking for input from the community. (4:55) Do you think this is a reasonable request or is it overreaching? (5:01) So if you have any thoughts on that, please reach out to us at the town of Alpine.

(5:06) Okay. (5:06) And just to clarify, so this isn’t something you’re going to restrict the use of fireworks (5:11) of inside town limits? (5:13) I mean, I guess usually a municipality will take that year by year depending on conditions, (5:18) but this would just be for the sale of fireworks specifically, correct? (5:22) Well, it’s actually illegal to shoot off fireworks in the town of Alpine already. (5:27) There’s an ordinance that disallows the shooting off of fireworks.

(5:32) I think all except for one day, like out of the 365, there’s one day that allows for it. (5:39) It’s kind of a crazy ordinance, but yeah, it’s illegal to shoot them off in the town (5:45) of Alpine currently. (5:46) So yeah, this would just make it illegal for the sale of fireworks.

(5:52) Okay. (5:52) If anyone has more comment, they’re welcome to reach out to the town of Alpine as they (5:57) continue to discuss those. (5:58) Mayor Eric Green this morning on the weekday wake up, anything else happening in the town (6:02) of Alpine you’d like to mention today? (6:05) Well, I would like to mention, I know people are kind of getting their 4th of July plans (6:09) together and I think we’ve made it pretty clear that we’ve got some big plans this year.

(6:18) We have asked Richard Petty to be our grand marshal of the parade and he has accepted. (6:25) So we’re really excited because we’re going to have a car show and Richard Petty is going (6:31) to pick the car that he’s going to ride in in the parade out of the car show. (6:36) So for everyone that has some cool old car sitting in their garage, I highly recommend (6:43) you get it shined up and enter it in the car show, which will be on July 3rd this year.

(6:49) So I know it’s a couple months out, but we’ve already had a lot of people that have shown (6:56) interest. (6:56) So if you do have some cool old car, go to the town of Alpine website and you can find (7:03) the registration under, I believe it’s under the 4th of July tab. (7:09) So yeah, we’re real excited.

(7:10) There’s a bunch of things that we have planned for the 4th of July this year and go to our (7:17) website or check out our Facebook page. (7:20) It shows a bunch of those things that we have planned. (7:23) Yeah, July 2nd, 3rd and 4th, it’ll be a three-day event this year because of America 250.

(7:28) Now for those who don’t know, Richard Petty, the king, the American former race car driver. (7:36) I mean, this guy is an icon in the auto industry. (7:40) I want to make sure people, this is a big deal to have this guy coming and being part (7:44) of the town of Alpine events.

(7:45) I mean, his nickname’s the king. (7:47) I mean, come on. (7:47) This guy, he’s a legend.

(7:49) So and as some of your listeners might know, Richard and his family has been coming here (7:56) for over 30 years. (7:59) So a lot of people in town have met Richard and I think it’s a great opportunity to see (8:07) him again. (8:08) And there, we have a gala planned, a fundraising gala for his foundation on the 3rd.

(8:14) So there’s a bunch of things going on with Richard, but we’re super excited about having (8:18) the king in town. (8:19) Excellent. (8:19) That’s again, town of Alpine, Mayor Eric Green this morning of the Weekday Wake-Up.

(8:23) Mayor, appreciate your time as always. (8:24) Anything we missed you’d like to mention today? (8:27) No, appreciate your time. (8:29) Thanks a lot, dude.

(8:29) You bet. (8:30) It’s all part of the Weekday Wake-Up this morning on SVI Radio.
