U.S. Hwy 189/191 closed between Daniel to Hoback Canyon; Rim Station, Rim Ranches and Sargent Lane told to evacuate due to Roosevelt Fire
The Roosevelt Fire continues to cause issues for Southwest Wyoming. As of the latest update on Sunday, September 23, the fire is now nearly 40,000 acres and is located 32 miles south of Jackson.
As of 2 p.m. on Sunday, U.S. Highway 189/191 is closed from Daniel (mm110) to the top of Hoback Canyon (mm160) due to the #RooseveltFire. Authorities are advising travelers to use alternate routes.
In addition, an evacuation order has been issued by the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office for the Rim Station, Rim Ranches and Sargent Lane as residents were told to leave the area immediately on Sunday afternoon.
The fire is being described at 24-percent containment and has claimed four structures. According to information from officials on site “the most active sections of the Roosevelt fire were along southern and northwestern perimeter. Fire activity remained moderate throughout and that allowed fire fighters to increase containment.
The southeastern section experienced isolated torching and spotting that increased the perimeter towards Rolling Thunder. In the northwest, the fire crested the ridge south of Kilgore Creek. A Red Flag Warning produced conditions in the afternoon that prompted single tree to group torching, spotting and crown runs.
Equipment on the ground includes 41 engines and a crew of 21. There are also five Type-1 (Heavy) helicopters, a pair of Type-2 (Medium) helicopters and a trio of Type-3 (Light) helicopters that are aiding in the blaze. In addition there are six dozers and nine water tenders.
