Afton’s Own Wylie Wilkes Discusses Jackson Giants Legion Baseball

Wyoming Legion Baseball is under way and the closest team to Star Valley plays about an hour and half to the north in Jackson which often means a shortage of Star Valley representatives participating in the league and the sport in general. This year though Star Valley’s Wylie Wilkes is one of the leading hitters and pitchers for the Giants and took the time on Friday to talk to Aaron and Dahl about the season so far for both himself and the team as a whole for First Bank of Wyoming Sports Friday.

The Giants are now 5-1 on the season (3-1 at the time of the interview) after winning both their games against Casper and Rock Springs on Sunday with the 2nd game being a massive one sided affair 26-3. A huge part of their early success has been the offense which has scored 70 total runs across their 5 victories and a big part of their offense this year has been Star Valley student Wylie Wilkes who is hitting .333 on the season and has drawn 5 walks in 17 plate appearances not to mention is posting a 3.00 ERA in 2 outings as the Giants starter thus far.

Wilkes went into detail during the interview about what it is like jumping into a team at the high school level where you don’t know any of your teammates and aren’t classmates with any of them like you typically would be for any other sport one would play at the high school level. However the nerves were quickly quelled as the team was really inviting to Wilkes and quickly banded together as a team according to Wylie and it didn’t take long to adjust and grow as a team with the Giants.

The Giants feature a wide array of talent from different areas including several parts of Eastern Idaho, Jackson, Wilson, Afton, Freedom and more and this dynamic rings true for many of the teams in Wyoming Legion as the teams aren’t directly associated with any individual high schools. For the teams out west like Jackson though travel is a huge part of the season as the west features a significantly less condensed array of teams with the next closest to Jackson being Green River and Lovell.

The Giants next action will be this coming weekend and the Jackson invite quickly coming up as well, it should be a great season of baseball action and you can follow Wilkes and the team on the Game Changers app and then searching for Jackson Giants – AA – 2023.
