First Spring High School Rodeo held on Friday

• Kerr, Hilton brothers finish top 3

The first spring rodeo for the 8th District Idaho High School Rodeo was held on Friday, April 26 in Pocatello. Middle and high school age athletes from Star Valley competed in the event, along with others from Wyoming including Cokeville.

A pair of local brothers from Star Valley both finished in the top three in High School team roping. Ryder and Case Kerr took second place with a time of 11.250 while Tristen and Ross Hilton finished in third with a time of 13.09. Case Kerr also finished in third place in Tie Down Roping with a time of 17.530.

Gracie Jackson of Etna, this year’s District 8 Rodeo Queen, finished 11th in Barrel Racing with a time of 18.618. Rylee Baxter of Afton, Brooklyn Brown of Afton and Kaylee Leserberg of Star Valley Ranch finished in 14th, 16th and 17th respectively while Kodee Johnson of Cokeville came in 21st in the barrel racing.

Other highlights include Payzli Nield of Afton finishing in the top ten in breakaway roping after an eighth place finish on a time of 4.740. Brooklyn Brown took home seventh in Goat Tying with a 9.64. Kaylee Leseberg and Gracie Jackson finished ninth and tenth respectively in Pole Bending with times of 24.053 and 24.3887.

Student athletes will compete in Grace, Idaho this weekend followed by an event in Montpelier, Idaho May 10-11. Star Valley will then welcome the district to a rodeo at the Lincoln County Fairground on May 17-18. Star Valley will also host the District Finals this year May 23-25.
