Weekend Sports Recap

• Saturday Update –

State Golf wrapped up the season in three locations. The Riverton Wolverines won the boys 3A team title with a score of 633. Worland was second with a 665 and Buffalo was third with a 694. Star Valley finished eighth with a score of 746. Riverton’s Parker Paxton shot an amazing 130 to win the tournament, followed by Worland’s Karsten Simmons who had a 141. PJ Horsley earned All-State honors with a stellar fourth place finish overall, shooting a 153.

The Wheatland girls edged Green River for the team title finishing with a 556, just two strokes in front of the Wolves. Lovell was third with a 577. Star Valley finished fifth with a 623.
Lovell’s Erika Cook repeated as state champ with a score of 150. Green River’s Isabella Salas was second with a 165. Star Valley had a pair of players just miss out on All-State with Jackie Simmons and Taylor Anderson finishing 11th and 12th respectively.

The Lady Braves Volleyball team picked up another win as they swept visiting Riverton 3-0 on Saturday. Scores for the match were 25-11, 25-15, 25-10. The program will be in Evanston on Tuesday September 21 as they begin 4A Southwest play against the Devils.

The Star Valley Cross-Country program hosted an event on Saturday morning with teams from Wyoming, Idaho and Utah in attendance. The Skyline girls put all five of their scoring runners in the top-nine and all seven in the top 11 to easily win the team race with a score of 26.

Star Valley was second with 74 led by Eve Mavy’s fifth place finish in a time of 21:41.
Bear Lake (84) was third followed by Mountain View (88) and Lyman (105).

Skyline also took the boys title with a score of 39 with five runners in the first 11 across the line. Mountain View had the top two finishers in Owen Burnett and Tanner Erickson to help solidify second place with a 46. Star Valley was third with 55 points. The Braves were led by freshman Habtamu Wetzel and senior John Hunting who placed fourth and fifth respectively.

Lyman was fourth (118) and Bear Lake was fifth (121).

The next scheduled event for the cross-country runners was to have been the Bob Firman Invite in Boise, Idaho. That even has been canceled due to concerns related to COVID-19. A replacement event has not yet been announced.

• Friday Update

State golf is halfway completed in Lander with defending girls champion, Erika Cook, leading the way with a 74. The Lovell Bulldog leads Green River’s Isabel Salas by five strokes. Star Valley has two players in the top-ten with Jackie Simmons shooting a 99 and Taylor Anderson carding a 101.

Green River is leading a very competitive girls team race with a Day One total of 279. Wheatland (283) and Lovell (288) are close behind. Star Valley (305) and Lander (308) round out the top five.

Riverton’s Parker Paxton shot a 66 to lead the 3A boys through the first round. Worland’s Karsten Simmons shot a 72 and Star Valley’s PJ Horsley is third with a 73.

Riverton has a firm grasp on first place as a team, shooting a 313. Twenty strokes back the Worland Warriors are second and Buffalo is third with a 340. Star Valley shot a 361 which was good for fifth overall.

On the volleyball court the Star Valley Lady Braves defeated a top-five team for the second time in a week as they took care of the #4 Cody Fillies, 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21).

The spikers defeated #4 Thunder Basin on the Afton floor last week as part of the Star Valley Invite.

Star Valley View Golf Course hosted teams from the region with squads from Wyoming and Idaho in attendance. Race results will be posted once they have been compiled.

Finally in football, the Braves absolutely dismantled the Rawlins Outlaws, 74-7 in Carbon County. The overall point total of 74 is a school record. The previous high for a Star Valley team came in 1980 in a 73-0 victory over Greybull. The 1967 team also defeated Kemmerer 72-0.

Taft McClure went a perfect 8 of 8 through the air for 145 yards and three touchdowns. Winston Green caught one o them and scored twice on punt returns from 70 and 68 yards. Lucas Chappell and Mason Hutchison each scored defensive touchdowns with fumble recoveries in the end zone. The Braves host the Jackson Broncs next Friday night in Afton for SVHS Homecoming.
