How to Catch Your Next Big Fish

When you begin to dabble in the sport of fishing, you most likely have two main goals: to have a fun time and to catch a fish. No matter if you’re a fishing pro or brand new to the territory, it is possible to catch a fish every time you head out on the water. Check out this easy guide on how to catch your next big fish and use it the next time you feel lucky out on the fishing boat.

Step one: Decide what kind of fish you want to catch

Before you get started on your fishing mission you need to prepare. A well-prepared fisher is a well-fed fisher (that is if you plan to eat your catches!). Take some time to research different kinds of fish. Find out which are most common in your area that can get pretty large. Learn their environment and schedule a fishing trip there with your intentions set. For example, if your heart is set on salmon, you’ll need to head out to an area where salmon commonly swim and have a healthy population.

Step two: Pick your catching material

What you catch your fish with matters. Each fishing method holds its own unique benefits and challenges. The most popular methods include:

Standard rod fishing

For standard rod fishing, you’ll need a standard fishing rod and reel, fishing line, hooks (get multiple sized hooks), bait, lures, bobbers, sinkers, swivels, needle-nose pliers, and a line cutter. These basics will get you started on the path to catching your next big fish.

Fly fishing

For fly fishing, you’ll need some unique gear, including a fly fishing rod and reel with either a sinking fly line or a floating fly line, fly hooks, leader and tippet, and flies. You can make your own flies if you wish, or you can simply purchase some.

Step four: Get to fishing

Once you have the right equipment and the right research completed, simply prepare your line, add the fly or the bait, and cast. Next, all you have to do is wait. That big catch will surely come your way eventually.

Remember to be patient. Fishing takes time and restraint. Don’t worry too much about catching that big fish. Wait for it to come to you, and don’t fret if it doesn’t happen right away. Big fish don’t get big by accident, as they’re the hardest to catch. Keep your spirits up and hold out for that big catch.
