• Five students become 4-year All-Staters
Forty-two music students from Star Valley High School qualified for and performed at the Wyoming All-State Band, Orchestra and Choir Clinic on January 20-21 in Cheyenne at South High School. Five of the students were honored as having qualified all four years of their high school music experience.
Annually, qualifying students attend the clinic and Gala Concert where they study and rehearse under the direction of guest conductors and work with top performing high school musicians from throughout the state.
Seniors Anna Haderlie, Shay Frazier, Anson Robinson, Daphne Olsen, and Charlotte Crook were honored at the Gala Concert for their musical excellence which qualified them for All-State participation all four years of their high school experience.
SVHS Orchestra students started their work at the clinic early with seating auditions, earning exceptional seating positions. Daphne Olsen was seated 6th in the first violin section. Paxton Probst was seated 1st in the second violin section. Brigham Hahn was seated 1st in the viola section, and Ethan Eyre was seated 2nd in the cello section.
SVHS Orchestra Director Lisa Barber, was very pleased for her students. “All of our students played well, and the concert was incredible! I am so proud of these kids! Their performance reflected hours and hours of practice at home, staying after school, or coming on remediation days. Having this many students make All-State only happens with a lot of support, and here in Star Valley, we have an amazing network of support including administrators, parents, and private teachers. Our kids have such a special opportunity to experience music at this level and I am grateful to everyone who plays a part in the growth that leads to their successful All- State auditions.”
Kari Allred, who directs the Choir program at SVHS, felt that the experience fostered growth in her students. “The repertoire they sang pushed them to new places and taught them more about the world of choral singing.” The clinic demands “long days of hard work, but the Gala Concert is an unbelievable musical event that many musicians don’t get to experience at this level. I’m so happy for these students and the opportunity they had to sing with an amazing conductor and choir. The sound they produce is just incredible!”
SVHS Strings student Drew Hanberg was particularly pleased with the work ethic exhibited by all the musicians. “It was fun to be around people who really, truly care because they had to work so hard to get there.”
Brigham Hahn recognized the personal value of working with a large group of skilled musicians. “It’s always a good experience to learn to grow individually as well as learning to grow with a large group of people you have never met before.”
“The All-state band performance was spectacular,” said Kurt Sand, who directs the SVHS Bands. “Definitely one of the stronger performances I’ve seen in years. All three groups were truly amazing. Our kids did a great job!”
